iwantacosworth
Im hating my Bmw in this weather at the moment, and have been kicking around the idea of replacing it anyway - been looking at turbo`d cars and a few people have mentioned the Audi A3 1.8T - and looking at Ebay,Autotrader,Pistonheads etc - there seems to be a lot of them on the market at around or under the two grand mark with FSH,Years Mot etc. Ive been wanting a (relatively) cheap, reliable turbo'd car ( if there is such a thing )for years to be honest and these seem to fit the bill - but are they too good to be true? Any help\advice/opinions are as always gratefully recieved! Graeme
Stu
I don't think anything of that age and value could be considered reliable and inexpensive.
iwantacosworth
True - my brother said the same thing - unfortunately my budget is very restricted - but at the same time I dont want to buy into a money pit either!
Stu
The 1.8 engine can be prone to oil starvation issues which can be expensive to fix. Of course with any turbo car you always need best part of a grand on the shelf for a turbo replacement if and when it goes pop. Other than that, just normal car things go wrong. I had an S3 in 2000 and it was mega, but unlikely a 2k car today.

massivewangers
Would one of the cars that shares that platform be better value? Golf? Leon? Octavia? All pretty much the same underneath, just wonder if you might get a bit more for your money with one of the others, as Audi's can be expensive sometimes. I know a few people with VAG cars with the 1.8T lump, many with quite high miles and they seem pretty reliable, even quite cheap ones, so I think they're pretty decent. Obviously any old car is a risk, but I'm sure you could buy worse.

ScORTED
If you think your going get a nice tight little sports number for a bag of sand (ish)your not... your going to get something a bit poop with mega milesthat said if you don't expect much and your willing to nurse it through the later miles of its life there is no reason it would be a bad purchase... show us some of the ones your considering
caled
A German turbo'd car for under £2k. It'll cost you a helluva lot more than that when it goes bang. *cough* autotrader clicky *cough*

I'd sooner buy one of those than a rebadged Longbridge relic Edited December 6, 2010 by massivewangers

I'd sooner buy one of those than a rebadged Longbridge relic each to their own, I suppose. Offer pretty much the best bang for buck, I reckon. But if you're going to call it any relic, its more a honda relic.
JC
IMO the Octavia is a very under rated car

I agree about the hatch, but for £1650, its a bit of a bargain. It's all largely irrelevant anyway, as he wanted a turbo'd car, a bit more BANG for his buck . And Ive read that mpg figures for turbo'd cars are way out due to the way the mileages are worked out?
