Question for all gym monkeys

Pro's and cons please.

 

Ive been gyming for a few years now, mainly freeweights, and i have a solid routine going but want to start making a bit more progress with bulk. Up to now ive been trying to achieve results using just food, and while im not a nutritionists wet dream, ive been fairly disciplined, taking on a lot of carbs (inc. pasta and potatoes) and protein (oily fish a few times a week, chicken a few times a week as well). I also take on a fair bit of fruit and vits every day, including green veg and a lot of bananas/apples (even taking vitamin suppliments daily).

 

As per the title, im thinking of upping my game a bit to achieve better results by taking either creatine or whey protein suppliments, and while ive done some research on the subject, its still a bit confusing.

 

Any advice welcomed.

To put it simply the protein will make you bigger (protein is the building blocks for muscles - you'll be getting this in all your chicken, red meats etc) as long as you're working hard, otherwise you'll just end up fat. Protein drinks give you the extra boost if you aren't eating enough, or even more if you need it.

 

Creatine (for me anyway) gave me extra strength and ripped my muscles. Some people say its pointless and useless but i got good results from it.

Get on the Whey Protein, it's awesome.

 

And stay well away from Creatine unless you know what you're doing.

 

Why stay away from it? I used the CEE tablets and found them very rewarding. No loading stage and easily taken with your protein shake. They recommend 6 weeks on, then 2-3 off so your body still naturally produces creatine. But agreed, if it's the choice of 2, protein all day. But worth trying creatine if you're training hard

I think thats my main problem in that im not eating enough. Ive definately seen results as ive put on around a stone since starting at the gym, and i think its all gone on muscle mass.

Yeah that seems to be what im hearing from most people, i think its something to do with creatine being an animal product, whereas whey isnt so its a lot better for you.

To get big you need to eat eat and eat. But make sure it's the right stuff. Protein shakes will help give you that protein boost your body needs and help you get lean. Regarding the creatine I don't know how they get it in a tab or powder but your body produces it anyway so can't be that bad for you? Everyones different. Trial it for a month alongside the protein and see how you get on. I was noticeably stronger when I came off creatine and a lot more ripped

Whey protien is a fast digesting protien, if it's mixed with water, but if it's mixed with milk it makes slower digesting, you mite be better trying a mass gainer protien as there higher in calories, plus alot of it is to do with food and working out how many calories you need to eat per day, which be around 5-6 meals per day.

 

As for creatine it's not for every one, I use it and get results with it, but I use creatine powder from my protien, with loading phase followed by matenence dose for five weeks, I've tried the pills didn't work as well as powder, but you also need to make sure you drinks lots of water while using it.

 

I'd also start using glutamine, amino acids, Beta alanine, if you go on MY PROTIEN there products good value and the flavours are really nice.

 

Plus I'd vary your work outs as if you do Keep changing exercises it keeps your muscles guessing and shocks them into new growth, it's just working out which exercises work, sounds like you have done well, I'm dieting after Xmas cardio 6 times aweek first thing in morning, followed by weights in evening if you need any more advice just ask....

Creatine is for people who really take the Gym seriously and know what they're doing. Unless you know what you're doing (like TC-DNB or Liam for example) then you can seriously f*ck yourself up taking it.

 

But with Whey Protein, you can't go wrong, and it's ideal for people like me who basically aren't all clued up on the supplements (and trust me I've done enough research!). Take it every morning, and after you've worked out. So once on a non-workout day and twice on a workout day.

 

I've been on it for the last 6 months and notice massive results. From what I understand, it basically allows your muscles to recover quicker.

 

Before I was on the Whey Protein, I would ache for days afterwards and be lucky to fit in 2/3 workouts a week. With the Whey Protein I can easily workout 5/6 times a week. It just speeds up the process really.

Another option for you to try could be something like an all in one, meaning it's protien,creatine,glutamine,bcaa, in one, something like reflex one stop is a good product.

 

It could be your body can't tolerate creatine it can cause bloating, stomach cramps, like. I've used it alot specially when I'm competeing but I'm lucky as who I train with is a natural mr universe so he advices me on everything training,diet,bulking,products i need to get ready for competition.

I used to use Myprotein as good value and products fairly good, but they aren't amazing. They do however have these stack/multi buys now so you can get a while bunch of products which will last a month or so. Pretty good, worth checking out.

 

I now use Predator Nutrition. The Syntha6 Protein is simply amazing, I've never had such a nice tasting shake and I was packing on a pound of muscle a week with that stuff.

 

Another product I would suggest is ZMA. You just take 3-4 tabs an hour before sleep and it helps repair your muscles and aids sleep. You wake up feeling so fresh. It's just zinc and magnesium, nothing dodgy and it's cheap. I get mine from myprotein. :thumb:

You'll platue with creatine very quickly i.ee get quick results for a few weeks then it's usually useless and some of the rubbish out there has some crazy side effects. Stick with just what you're doing now.

 

No harm in adding a little bit protein to up your iintake, but ideally you want it all from your food, look for around 20-40g/day depending on your goals.

 

Don't go for whey protein, go for a protein blend with protein/egg whites/albumen/milk protein, much more nutritionally beneifitial for you and will save you on the vitamin supplements - If you're getting enough RDA from your food, don't bother with supplements, but if you're going to go down that route.... I use MyoFusion - it's expensive but there's nothing better out there IMO

Oh yes, forgot to mention that. I only use it now and then, when im training real hard.
