The Badger
Hi all Good old weather, my 98 Escort 1.6 CL estate recently left me in the middle of know where!!! Electric gone, so I have replaced the battery as it was knackered, I took it to a local garage and they did a "drop" test on the battery/alternator, they advised the battery was kanckered but alternator ok, hence changing the battery. Problem now is the same, car runs fine until I request some leccy, then it just dies when I hit the throttle, turn leccy off and all is well! So my questions are: Is it defo the alternator? If it is which alternators will fit as I am getting a lot of mixed info from a few garages/scrapyards, some are saying I can use any from a MK5 upwards, diesel, 2.0 etc. And some are saying that I need an exact replacement, like for like, so i am a little confused, also it seems direct replacements are more than say a diesel one, am I just unlucky enough to have a car that requires exact parts or are people just trying to fleece me? Any advice/info, as always, would be greatly appreciated. James

James iirc, the alternator on the zetecs have a third wire running to them which is some form of signal wire, my previous Si suffered the same sudden drop out as yours did and when I investigated the next day I saw a tesco's bag had gone under the car some time in the night as I was driving and yanked the smaller wire off the alternator point....I knew the bag was to blame as the wire was still wrapped around the remains of the bag that had happily welded itself to the exhaust downpipe

The Badger
Thanks for all the replies. Now the snow has stopped I have been able to get out n have a look at the escort. It seems the power wire from the alternator had corroded at the terminal, I have replaced this and I am now getting the following readings at the battery: Ignition on, engine not started: 12.78vEngine running at tickover: 14.09vEngine running at tickover with full beams and heater on full: 13.57v Are these readings ok or does it show there is still a problem? Once again thanks for the replies. James

ScORTED
the readings are fine mate thats charging ok, best to take the battery off and charge it fully with a charger as the alternator alone won't fully charge your battery

Now I can give the Corsa back I have been borrowing, TFFT, the handbrake cable snapped after about 2 hours of borrowing it, I hate corsa's! Is that Keith Duckworth of the Mike Costin & Keith Ducworth partnership? James Edited December 20, 2010 by The Badger
