Ginger Dave
I'm looking at getting my own sat nav as I currently have to borrow my Dad's TomTom one v1, I'm looking to spend around £100 Can anyone recommend me one?

georgeh811
i have to agree, i have had a good few sat nav's in the £100-150 range and none really compared to a tomtom
DaweV6
TomTom has been the best for about 8 years now.
mutley
i used to be under the same misaprehension that tom tom was best but after using navigon on my iphone (which uses navteq maps) i realise how crap tom tom actually is. so my 2 tomtoms are now resigned to a box in the kitchen to be used for a last resort
shawdreamer
my sisters tomtom one seemed pretty decent until I bought a older Navman S70 (you get them refurbished for new data tyes now) and it p*ssed all over her tomtom......then curled one off in its lap...... then felt sick of how pathetic it now looked with p*ss all over it and a nice steamin log in its lap and promptly vomited on it too. Kinda validated my belief that just cos everyone buys it.....doesnt mean its the best or even the most appropriate. Get a refurbed Navman, they go for around the £70 new from online stores and with the new data handling they have instant rerouting, traffic alert, updated speed cam data aswell as being wide screen and very easy to use. SLEEMAN
i have had a garmin for the last 5 years and hasn't let me down once!!!! even during courier work!! everyone says tom tom are the best but to be honest i tried using one compared to my garmin and bloody hell the tom tom was annoying. the directions they give out a good 3 or four times, don't want that on a long trip. and the functions are harder to understand. if you want something simple and easy to use without giving you a headache then go for garmin!! Scort_CVH
Ive got a reasonably cheap navigon and its fine to use, a little slow when its first turned on but its managed fine for use for doing deliverys, picking up parts etc etc. at one time it was used for 7hrs a day 6 days a week

Search ebay for "Navman not working or for spares", I had one. Yes it does look pretty - but is it faster ? Better out in the sticks ? Does it have easily stealable maps and updates ? Tomtom isn't perfect - I would have some stories where I managed to end up, but I just can't find anything with better postcode recognition, more POI, faster update, etc.
mutley
i think it depends where you live. i find tom tom rubbish for postcodes for a lot of places and i dont even mean new towns or estates i mean in general and this is why ive given up with it when the navigon on my iphone finds everything first time
Stu
I can't claim to have tested every satnav on the planet, but i've tried a few and have come to the conclusion that TomTom is very good for a dedicated unit and as far as mobile device software goes, I think CoPilot is the best.
