Markt8
My Escort diesel van has a problem when im driving it doesnt overheat but when im sitting still it heats straight up, ive got no heat from the heaters and i can open the coolant cap when the cars upto temp with no pressure what so ever? all the pipes seem hot but the one below the water bottle feels as if theres no water in it? Any ideas appreciated thanks guys Mark

Markt8
Water Pump ? has it been run without correct stength anti freeze no idea but its always been like this since ive owned it, i dont think its the water pump though because when it starts to heat up when im sitting if i rev it then it goes back to normal temp within a min or 2 and the heaters get hot in the car mark

The only way to check mine is to bounce the car and look for movement in the bottle.
caled
could it be my thermostat shut? mark Sounds more like the thermostat would be stuck open, but Im not sure how that explains the lack of pressure, unless the expansion cap lid is faulty, too. Another cause for the car to heat up when not moving would be if the fan doesnt fire up - can you hear the rad fan kicking in? If it doesnt, there is a fuse for it in the under bonnet fuse box. Are there any indications of coolant leaking from the thermostat - assuming its OAT coolant then you should be able to see a pinky/red/orange residue around where it leaks from - it might be a dry crystalline form rather than sludge as the water has the tendency to evaporate off. Whats your coolant level like? Is it constantly in need of topping up?
Markt8
coolant never needs topped up its spot on, but one day when i was out i noticed the water in the bottle had went higher up so maybe air got in? the rad fan never kicks in, the fuse is ok but it doesnt kick in, still though its a bit weird how i have no coolant pressure, no tshhh or anything when i open the cap even if its been running for hours mark
RO55
Replace ya cap mate ... Try and get a hold of a coolant tester and see if it holds 10psi ..
Markt8
Forgot to add The coolant is the usual reddy colour for a ford and doesnt appear to be any leaks, i think the thermostat might be stuck open as when on the motorway the car gets cooler and cooler but it still doesnt explain how i suddenly get heat in the cab when the engine goes towards overheating? caled
So its not holding pressure but not losing any coolant? Interesting... Cheapest option would be the one to try first - grab a new expansion bottle cap from the local scrappies and see if it holds pressure. Id also be quite concerned that the fan never kicks in. Markt8
This is kind of weird, ive noticed that if i put my heaters on cold and turn the fan on the temp gauge instantly rises, but it rises with the higher the setting on the fan switch, it also rises if i press the brakes and turn the indicators on? im thinking i have an electrical gremling maybe as when it says im overheating the water pipes dont seem that hot in the engine bay Mark
