What work will you be doing on it?

Not much to be honest. I have a big development project to do throughout this year but that doesn't really require this kind of power :)

How much does that kind of gear cost? 16GB RAM, wooof!

About £1500 without the case and video card.

I want it to last a good few years.

Hmmm really not sure about this sandy bridge stuff... seems like it going to limit those of us who like to fiddle.

I'm intending to run it at a conservative 4ghz.

they've had that new sandy bridge CPUs up at 5Ghz stable on air, Very impressive :O

I'm waiting for the 2011 boards to come out before I upgrade anything of mine (mostly because ive just built mine  )

I think an SSD will be on the cards for me at some point too, Im waiting for the new OCZ vertexs to be released

Extra power, extra cooling and more control... sorted! :pancake:

Surprised you didn't go for something as insane as this:

Slap two of these hexa-cores on there:

Had to update the motherboard BIOS before it'd even POST.. I didn't expect it to resolve the issue, but it did!

And some numbers.. standard CPU clock, 1600 Mhz RAM:

I'll probably look at upping the CPU to 4 Ghz as fully loaded at 3.49 Ghz (turbo mode) it's only getting to 49C temp with the cooler above.

What cooler did you go for?

Oops, forgot to mention:
