Need to know something that I cant honestly seem to find on the net.

 

If I want to carry something on the roof of a car, lets just say in this instance, a kayak, do I legally need a roof rack, or so long as its secured is it fine?

afaik as long as its secured properly then it is fine, just dont exceed load limit.

but better to put a roof rack on to avoid damage to roof i would think..

Must be secured safely, not obstructing your view/lights/numberplate and not protruding more than 18" without a marker iirc

You can get "soft racks". My mate uses one for his surf board, works a treat
