Posted March 3, 201113 yr Hey y'all, the other week I was driving and was having to work to get the car to get into second, next time I got in I pressed the clutch pedal down, started and lurched forward i.e. first gear was engaged and the clutch pedal wasn't working. From what I could find on here I figured the cable was stretched or even snapped, so I replaced that today and it's exactly the same :/So with the engine started I tried putting the pedal down and all I get is a hissing sound, and from the engine bay whilst pulling the lever on the bell housing this seems to be coming from within the gearbox. So down to brass tacks, any suggestions what this could be? I was rather hoping to be on my way home tonight and now i'm pretty well stranded and need to get to the ford dealer in the next hour if I need to order any specific parts to be delivered tomorrow to fix this, help me EscortEvolution, you're my only hope... ps. engine revs drop very slightly when I press the pedal down and get this hissing sound...
March 3, 201113 yr Sounds like gear box is fubar or clutch is fubar, clutch would be cheapest to repair about £180+
March 3, 201113 yr Sounds like the Clutch isn't disengaging enough from the Flywheel if it drops in revs. The hissing sound may be the Release Bearing.
March 9, 201113 yr Author Okay, so the ford dealership seem to think it's the gearbox is shagged as well so this leaves me with two options. I could replace the gearbox or just break the car for parts, i've been looking to get rid of it for a while and get an st170 but not quite like this! I was wondering, is a gearbox change feasible under axle stands or is it an engine out job? I've really got no idea how much they weigh etc so please excuse the likely daft questions!
March 10, 201113 yr You can do it on axle stands but you can have issues getting it alligned due to the rear mount on the subframe One evening/day and a £50 gearbox seems the feasible solution to me
March 12, 201113 yr clutch has gone friction plate has disintegrated hence the hissing sound the fibres are spinning round and rubbing on fly wheel and pressure plate
