i5 2500k just purchased :D

You do realise that the 2500k is the 95W version dont you?

What does that mean, chief?

Was just thinking of your 500w power supply, but if youre not running a seperate gfx card i guess it doesnt matter. Have you decided what youre going to do with server v built in storage?

Still undecided. I think I'll save the Dell Workstation for when I move in the with missus.

In the mean time I'll whack a spare HD into the new PC and continue using a 1TB external drive for my prawn and films.

Loading network and usb drivers onto a PC with no network/usb and no optical drive was fun.....

Logged onto the NES PC, copied the DVD to the C:\ and then took the SATA drive out and connected it to the new PC.

Genius.

Ah the NES PC, forgot all about that :pancake:

Having similar facepalm moments at the minute as well. trying to update my very old gigabyte BIOS which you can only do with a floppy drive. i dont even have one any more.

That will be running rather nicely with that setup, mate has the 2500k and its a cracking bit of kit. if you decide to OC it (that board will pretty much do it for you). 4ghz is nothing to this CPU, irrc thay have had 5ghz out of these

Updating the firmware on an OCZ SSD = massive thumbs down.

The only proper way to do it after installing Windows is to create a Linux boot disk on a USB drive and launch the updater toolbox through Linux.

Quite a lot of hate for that online with a lot of people (including me) saying that if they knew the hoops you have to jump through to update the firmware, they'd have looked at other brands.

So i take it youre up and running with windows on the ssd? Have you noticed much difference with boot and data transfer times? The comparisons v. sata 7200rpm HDD's that ive seen online havent been that impressive.

Arrived this morning.

I went for the 1TB Spinpoint F3 just to test as it was on Ebuyer's deal of the day for £39.99. If it was any good I'd buy a couple more for this PC and the Dell workstation.

The performance is fantastic, being 7200rpm and SATA II, but it's loud, too loud IMO. The case fan pictured was bought because the standard one was too noisey for me, but the Spinpoint gives off a constant low-pitched hummmmmmmmmmm.

I'll probably plump for a couple of the WD green lower speed drives for data and dump this in another machine.

In other news, the Corsair RAM wasn't being recognised as 1600mhz, just 1333mhz. An overclock in the fantastic BIOS GUI bumped it up easily and changed the Windows Experience score from 7.6 to 7.8. I tried 1866mhz(or whatever the next step was) and it wasn't having any of it; wouldn't even post.

I'll need to investigate whether the RAM is just not capable of it, or if I need to tweak the voltage.

T3400 with 1tb Spinpoint will be for sale shortly if anyone's interested. I've no idea on price yet, but it'd be a bargain :)
