wwwd
Looking to get a portable hard drive, with around 500GB / 1TB of space preferably. Anyone know of any decent deals or links to good quality drives? Reliability is obviously important! Any recommendations welcome

Craig855S
I've had issues with the cheap as hell ebay enclosures that i put laptop hard drives into. But hard drives that come in manufacturer enclosures will be pretty much all the same. I have a WD passport, a phillips, a samsung in a cheap enclosure (which doesnt work, but the disk is fine) and a seagate in a cheap enclosure that is fine. Personally i wouldnt put important data on a cheap hong kong disc, so this is the cheapest of the good makes for you Click If you buy a 2.5" laptop drive and a semi-cheap enclosure you may save a few quid, but as I've said the cheap enclosures are not 100% Edited April 12, 2011 by Craig855S
smithyandco
We keep buying Seagate drives at work... all of which have been abused in some way or another and still work spot on!We use the 2.5" versions as they are mostly bus powered We've had a few Lacie drives... all of which the PSUs have failed on. Lacie argued about warranty replacements of the PSUs until they were out of warranty then simply said "Out of warranty now, we cannot provide replacements"... assholes! So yeah... Seagate are good! shawdreamer
+1 for seagate I have both a 500Gb (from Argos) and a 1Tb connected by a simple USB2 to my office pc. They've never caused any issues, have quick response times and have never stuttered once in use (I store all my films on the 500Gb one and it steams them back beautifully) added benefit, Seagate are suprisingly cheap. PeeWee
Never had any problems with Lacie drives tbh, I use a 160gig usb powered on my Nintendo Wii & a 750gig powered unit on a desktop. Had both for years now without a single hiccup. Edited April 12, 2011 by PeeWee
