Digital dials

Sorry, never realised you'd already read post.

It's all new to me.

I once planned to fit digi dials to my Rs, so I saved various post on the subject, which is why I have the links to post.

However, nearly all post I've saved will probably relate to a petrol engine.

If I do manage to find something more specific, I'll post here.

Tonight I went to try the suggested pin 48 on the ECU to pin 21 on the instrument cluster.

My ECU did not have a wire at pin 48! So I took a wire from an old ecu connector and inserted it into mine.

On the instrument cluster side, pin 21 is already occupied by a black / white wire, although there is no black/ white wire at the ecu.

When I fitted this same instrument cluster to my old van, Im sure I used pin 20, so I inserted a wire at pin 20.

Started the van up and nothing on the tacho (or test mode).

So just in case, I removed the wire from pin 21, and replaced it with the feed from the ECU (previously at pin 20).

Still nothing....

So either, my ECU does not output the tacho signal on pin 48 and / or my cluster does not take the signal in at pin 20.

Its a long shot, but im going to pop down to Ford tomorrow to see if they have any diagrams / pin outs on their system.

Failing that I might have to admit defeat unless I can find some info on the EEC V ECU, on a 2000 onwards TD engine.

Got it sorted!

Turns out the wire was in place all along, just the cluster was expected the tacho on pin 20 (as I had them in my previous van).

So I moved the tacho wire from the factory pin 21 position, to pin 20 on the connector plug and all works fine!

To finish off, any escort made 2000 on, that came with digi dials as standard, should have the tacho feed in place, from the ECU rather than the alternator, and any dials can be used, you don't need diesel specific ones like when fitting a rev counter to earlier models.

On the 1.8 TD ./ TC, The tacho feed come from pin 18 on the ECU via white / black wire, through the fuse box, to pin 21 on the instrument cluster connector plug.

The ECU gets its signal from the crank position sensor and multiplies this to create and output the tacho signal on pin 18.

Hope this helps others as it has been difficult to find information on it!
