Mis-firing/spluttering?

I removed the plugs on the weekend to find 1 that the porcelain had cracked. Replaced with a set I had down the shed...

Seemed to run fine for a day, now its started to miss again....

Doesnt seem to be the plugs..

I've just disconnected the MAF and it made no difference to idle when I unplugged it ( unplugged whilst running ). It didnt seem to miss when I just drove around the block with the MAF disconnetced - could be MAF at fault?

What difference will it make driving with the MAF disconnected?

All plugs were a nice tan colour.

Engine is standard apart from a 2.0l TB.

Leads are about 12 months old, how will I tell if one is cracked! a continuity check with a meter (I dont have a meter though).

Havnt measured the gaps (yet), they are what they were set at when removed from the box about 12 months ago..

Simply look at the rubber and look for fraying, splits etc, it would cause a direct short.

I'd measure those as well then 1.3mm they should be. There's no harm in a new set then, you're due for some.

What about driving to work in the morning (14 miles) with the MAF disconnected? will it harm it?

Can then see if it still miss's.....

Or should I reconnect it?

It's best not to drive anything with a misfire, it's quite a serious engine killer. But i'm no expert on MAF's, but i'd think driving it with it unplugged wouldn't do much good.

Could be many of things if its at a certain revs,

throttle position sensor

dodgy plugs/leads/coil as said

cam/crank sensor

Injectors

Frankly it could be anything at all.

Is it an intermittent misfire or is it always there?

Id maybe start by removing the 2.0 TB and going back the the 1.8 one, the 2.0 TPS was designed to be used in conjuction with the 2.0 ECU, Incorrect parts can pass incorrect information to the ECU resulting in such problems

I call it a misfire, but, it may not be......

I remember when one of my HT leads wasnt fitted tidy, then this gave a misfire and the whole car was shaking and would not rev clear, this is different to that.

If I drive constant at around 2k RPM, then it seems to have a flat spot (thats a better way of describing it). As I was pulling out of a junction (in second) on the weekend, there ws no responce to the throttle, then it responded and revved.....

The 2.0l TB has been on for about 18 months, no hardware has been changed recently..

Onlt thing I have altered is started to use Super Unleaded (4 weeks), which has sorted my idle issue out completely :pancake:

Are you losing any water or oil?

My old car started spluttering/misfiring and all that jazz and I checked my water out of habit and it was down low, fix was a replacement head gasket in the end, pretty extreme I know but its something not mentioned yet.

Could always try resetting the ECU, wouldnt be the first time its ironed someones issues out, other than that, remove the 2.0TB, there is literally no point having is there at all and what everyone else has said.

  • 2 months later...
Mine started out like this, really annoying misfire at random intervals. I spent lots of money fitting new maf's, sensors of all descriptions, coil packs, leads etc etc.

In the end it was the head gasket, fouling no 1 spark plug. They have just got to this age now!

Do you look at the age of the thread before posting? #JustSayin'
