So if anyone has any info throw it my way please in car pc is pretty much impractical now........ just glue a android tablet to your dashboard and you've got just about everything a decent car pc can offer at a fraction of the price. PeeWee
I would agree there.I have my iPhone on a dash mount that takes care of pretty much everything, GPS, email, internet, movies, music so I hardly feel the need to add a million wires & headache to get simple tasks done. An Android tablet would do just nice, 7" capacitive touchscreen isn't expensive now, see the Android tablet thread for more info. You can actually get tablet mounts for cars on eBay too. RobMk6
Well this is it, but I'm looking for something to replace the head unit completely and be able to store almost every track I have, What I may look into is something that can run a HDD to a head unit, I'm ONLY after this functionality for the storage space. In which case an Aldi head unit and a 32 gig micro sd card will do the trick. (the head units are amazing for around £45 and have bluetooth built in too)

You will need to make it clear what you want tbf.You clearly stated you "ONLY" wanted this for the storage hence my second recomendation, otherwise simply get a cheap tablet. You say your current HU is awsome so is it storage, movie playback, gps you need or something not yet stated? Stu
A car pc or a tablet computer is not the solution to your problem. Just buy a better head unit that allows you to plug in external storage for your tracks.
RobMk6
In essence, I'm after something to be able to store the music I have on my laptop, so that I need not keep chopping and changing the music on my iPod/phone. My current head unit I have to go in can handle external plug ins via USB, Bluetooth audio, aux cables and all the rest of it, you can even place your music device inside it etc. it even deals with phone calls and all phone functionality besides text via the display. But I'm one of these anal type people and all my music is sorted into folders on my laptop, so I'm looking for a similar type interface. I'd rather not be plugging things into it as I hate having wires dangling around with a passion. So that's essentially what I'm after, and either way the standard head unit will be coming out, which I'll need a code for as it's not noted anywhere on the docs

My wireless range extends beyond my house to my cars also so I occasionally use it to transfer media files (mp3's, WMA's) direct from my main pc's external HDD to the Sciphone (IPhone 4 fake) I built into the Escort's dash, my Zte Blade android has even more versatility than the Sciphone in every regard so does all the same but better again. (saves faffing about with memory cards or wire usb tethering) both phones are then bluetoothed connected to whichever car Im using to play the tunes through the HU's installed giving my near endless versatility in what I have to hand tune wise while keeping the sound qaulity playback of my sound systems. you can pick up older Androids secondhand for buttons nowadays, Zte's are £110-£120 new / £80 - £100 used, while some of the older samsung galaxy models are as cheap as £50 used but in pristine quality. gives you what you want and more it seems, saves you having to makes any hardware changes also, just a quick setup and go with the right free apps like wireless/bluetooth tethering and a cardocking widget to make incar use of the phones interface simple and easy. I'm sure you mean networking rather than tethering to your home PC, & probably the same for what you call "remote control" of your computer?Tethering is more closely related to using your phones 3g access to gain internet access to a device such as laptop/tablet.A simple 32gig micro sd card is far easier for transfering & storage of music files with minimum fuss. Take into account an average album in mp3 format will only take up around 320mb of space there should be little need to keep messing about between computer & mem card.I shall let you work out just how many albums you could store on a tiny 32gig card. Probably around 100.
