demented
When adding ST170 discs and Mondeo calipers, are spacers required behind the discs, in between the hub and discs ? If so, would the 3mm Alloy wheel spacers be suitable? At present, I've fitted the 300mm discs and Mondeo calipers onto my Escort, following the various "how to" guides and the discs sit so far back onto the hub that they rub against the caliper and lower ball joint rubber, so much so that the discs won't rotate ? However, when I add a washer of approx 3 or 4 mm thick, one over each wheel stud before fitting the discs, when the discs and calipers are fitted, this gives sufficient clearance to allow free rotation of the discs ? Unless I've missed something, I don't recall any "how to" guide stating spacers or washers are required between the hub and discs. Any advice please ? Stu
You're supposed to use the ST170 calipers.

No you're right, the only spacers reference is the washers for the carrier bolts. Pffft, I can only think that the disc isnt right? I'd wait for one of the more mechanical experts with regards to fitting spacers but ive not heard of the disc sitting too deep. You're supposed to use the ST170 calipers. You use MK3 Mondeo calipers with ST170 300mm discs, still his problem is the disc sits too deep before the caliper even gets involved I think considering the disc rubs on the ball joint, which can only mean the discs that he has are different to those in the guide or something weird with the hub. ST Calipers are used on the rear disc conversion as an alternative to fitting an RS complete beam. Edited June 2, 2012 by Naylor2006
demented
Maybe I did miss something somewhere but I'm almost certain that the 300mm brake discs upgrade,it is always suggested to use ST170 discs and Mondeo calipers ? Is that the wrong combination ?

No, like I said, you use 300mm Focus ST170 discs and MK3 mondeo calipers, you have the right gear, well you should do, my only worry is that somehow you've ended up with the wrong discs, I cant think as to why they would sit deeper? demented
Thanks for confirming I have the correct gear. The discs are new but from an aftermarket manufacturer, is it possible the discs may of been machined slightly too deep during manufacturing or is such a theory unlikely ? Are the ST170 front discs with Mondeo calipers the same set up for all mk5/6 Escorts, including the RS2000 ? I can post photos but will be later on this afternoon or tomorrow

I can post photos but will be later on this afternoon or tomorrow My discs are/were brand new aftermarket as well, I have to be honest, I dont know alot about other models of escort outside the MK6 as thats all ive owned but im pretty sure that the car used in the 'how to' guide is a mk5 or mk5b and the RS2000 should be the same considering you can take a RS2000 front setup and bolt it straight to your SI, LX, Finesse etc. RS2000 uses 260mm front discs and 270mm rears. The machining could be different, im struggling to think what else could let it sit deeper, which MK do you have?
Hezz
you can do both variations - st170 disks with calipers or st170 disks with mondy mk3 the mondy is the more popular for obv reasons not sure what the fitting differences are though
demented
Mine is a Mk6.I was just curious as to whether model variations could be the issue.Such as a different hub fitted or hub bearing carrier being the cause ?
p4u1
if you have fitted mk2 mondeo calipers you need escort cosworth 4x4 disks, which calipers do you have? mk2 or mk3
Stu
You're supposed to use the ST170 calipers. I repeat. Stop tugging yourself around the room.

Any advice please ?ive also done this mod on a mk6 and you need any mk3 mondy calipers and focus st 170 discs .the discs are the same as mondy ones but only have 4 wheel stud hole and mondy's five .the only issues i had were the bolts were a touch long and touched the disc , so had to cut them down by couple if mm .and had to make up some brackets to hold flexi hose . no spacers are needed . i am guessing you have the wrong discs Edited June 2, 2012 by etrebus
