So, on my day off work I've been thinking (dangerous)

Basically one of my mates has just put a deposit down on a house, he's 20yo works full time (bear in mind houses up here are much cheaper (70k - 3 bed in an average area needing modernised))

Me - I'm a uni student about to do into my honours year, work part time in retail and spunk all my cash on cars

I've just been thinking is it time to start being more sensible, save for a presentable car and think about the future or enjoying being young and reasonably care free while

I can?

Sparked off by other mate offering me a saph cvh cossie rep (rst and sideways etc) but waste of cash

I have pondered the same thing, ive been living with my GF in rented house for 6 years and I work hard play hard and spend all my money (well nearly) on my car, Im 27 and not married and being my gf is simular age I guess society says its time for marriage mortgage and children.....

Well no, to afford a mortgage for a house worth owning I would need a massive deposit, I have no possibility of inheritance so this money would only come from me and the way I see it i'd need 20k at least saved and a 40 year mortgage. I earn a good wage for my age and location and have only been in that position since promotion around a year ago. I could save that money in around 2 years but i'd have to do nothing else. My car brings me joy and sadness but the journey over the last year has on the whole been rewarding. I dont see why I should give up so much to save for a house when I can just throw money at parties and my car, not interested in children yet and am fine renting. The housing market is a complete mystery to me as well not to mention difficult for a first time buyer.

So although I dont know if ive fully understood the question I wouldnt worry about what your mates are doing and do what makes you happy, for me its my car right now as my main 'hobby' if you will, the time effort and money put it is high and my mates think im nuts whils they drive around in their golfs and leons but they arent me. Theres no need to force yourself in a certain direction because of what you feel you 'should' be doing.

I would have partly agreed with some of the above before now in that you should be enjoying yourself at a younger age, but i must say that even though the stamp duty holiday has ended theres still not been a better time to get yourself on the property ladder than right now. In a few years time when property values start going up again you will regret not having invested in your own pad.

I'd regret not buying a house as soon as I was able to. The amount of money i've burned over the last decade or so would have got me a long way into ownership by now.

ditto.

Wish i'd have got sensible ALOT earlier.

Another one for this.

Doing it this year but should definitely have done it 5-7 years ago instead of pissing money on crap cars, girls and getting pished.

Those with the 'you only live once' attitude are either very well off, or very naive.
