redmex
Hi GuysI have read so many things on here about Mondeo to Escort engine swaps but three things dont seem clear to me..Donors- When did the Mondeo Silvertop get discontinued as i dont want to buy a car on fleabay and then discover its a blacktop!..I have a "DESK" ECU, will this run any age mondy Silvertop well or just the mk1 (IE:- did all mondy silvertops use same injectors etc etc??)My final Q "Sorry i have so many!" My car is a 1995 mk6, (Aluminium inlet manifold) and from a previous conversion many years ago i found 1.8 Mondeo injectors wouldnt fit the escort 1.8. So how can Mondeo injectors be used, do i need the later escort Plastic inlet???. Ta Sparkie Edited June 14, 2012 by redmex
Naylor2006
1998 was when they stopped putting that 2.0l silver top in, so some MK2's have them and yes that ECU will be fine for all 2.0 silvertops fitted until when ever it was specifically in 1998 they stopped em. I'm not sure about the older style inlet manifold, don't know anyone who's done it, I've only seen 1.8 plastic inlet manifold with 1.8 induction pipe used with 2.0 injectors and 2.0 throttle body. Someone prob knows how to do but I can't help there sorry. PS: Ask the sellor if it's a silver top though, dont just do it on reg of course. JC
The silver top ran from 1993 to 2000, think there was a slight change around 96? but no real difference, so any one is good for conversion, The DESK DEEP or DEWY ECU are non PATS and from the early mk1 mondeo's and will work with any silvertop 2.0 you will need the 2.0 injectors to match the ECU. - i think i have some where spare if you are desperate, I would use the escort 1.8 plastic inlet, that's what i run
redmex
Thats great advice , thanx So I need to get a late escort inlet system and a Mondeo donor then.. Does the Escort plastic inlet manifold differ from 1.6 to 1.8?.. Im now thinking i need to measure the loom too as i guess mine will have the plugs in wrong place for a plastic inlet, not hard to change but the car is tidy and i dont want chopping it .. Im now thinking a xr3i or 1.8 cabriolet donor would b better choice as i get a disk brake rear axle too (are all 1.8 cabriolets are 130hp as im sure i read it somewhere.. ??? I might sell the 2 litre ECU's and go 130hp 1.8 as its a cleaner conversion on my earlier car.. I have a DESK and a DEEP ECU, both will be sold if i can find a cheap 130 donor Thanks again Sparkie

Naylor2006
All said and done the 2.0 is an easier conversion me thinks, although the engines and ECU's getting abit rarer all the other bits are much easier to find, mostly from JC I also reckon there's more good 2.0's out there than a ragged 130spec, 2.0 mondeo is a family car. Micky Gti is looking for an ECU if you wanna sell one of them or I wouldn't mind a spare.
supersport
you've seen my MK5, wiring looms can be made to fit. the best thing to do is find a 2.0l silver topmondeo and swap the engine over, you can use the pats ecu if you use the mondeo chip key. That said, I wd like to see your car soon to visualize whats different on the late inlet system before making a decision. Cheers Naylor for info regarding selling the ECU's, ill keep u in mind if dont go 2 litre and sell them. I agree finding a good 2 litre engine is a better option especially as i have two early ECU's which would mean i have a spare and as u say they are getting rare now
supersport
as you know, the TPS plug is different, aswell as a couple of other sensors, just swap them over.i've got a sump, pick up pipe and dip stick if you go 2.0l.

Stu
You can use the early 2L ecu's on a later blacktop engine too, if you can be arsed to make it fit.

I guess if you've been arsed to do it once there's far more low miles blacktops out there to choose from.
