Windows 7 doesn't come with Microsoft office either.

Why are you buying Windows 7 if this one is licenced?

Have you tried it on another network , your brother in law for example?

Its having none of it on any network, my mate/neighbour allowed me to try it over his Virgin network and low and behold the exact same result, shows network connection, shows connection to the internet, still cannot display webpage.

Sounds like a firewall issue...

You might have disabled the Windows Firewall from Control Panel but if you have any other Interwebz Securitiez-ingz installedingz then you need to turn that off instead.

If you have Sophos installed then I suggest killing the device with fire... I currently have a 72hour headache induced headache of anything made by Sophos (/b*stards)

Download (Right click, Save Link As) this, run it and take screenshots when requested... post those on here!

The screenshots will give us a better idea of what is going on.

before I do any of that thingmabob'in

just ran through a c'prompt pinging session.

get good hits from my own gateway IP (1ms x 4)

but both ping attempts to google and yahoo timed out x 4

that tells me what?, that even though the computers saying the nets on its actually tellin me porkies?

tried the whole resetting the router/modem shite various sites suggested, I even accessed my router settings to confirm that even though it doesn't seem to be getting right the way through to the net the laptop is still actually confirmed on the network access list and shows no restrictions.....which it is.

oh and phil.........seriously fella, using midget porn to ridicule others, thats my trademark, your a thousand years to soon to try and turn it around on me sonny.

Right...

So other devices connect fine via the same router fine?

Just this one device that does not even though it's connection to the router is fine?

That would still possibly suggest firewall but also could suggest router issue (blacklisted local IP, small whitelist IP range etc).

Try this:

(Repeat this step for both Wireless and Wired connections)

Open IPv4 Properties and manually type in details.

* IP Address (make sure it's similar to router IP - eg. if router IP is 192.168.0.1 then use 192.168.0.10 or if it's 192.168.1.1 then use 192.168.1.10)

* Subnet (fills self out but should be 255.255.255.0

* Default gateway (Router IP)

* Preferred DNS (Router IP)

* Alt DNS (blank)

Click OK

Try and connect again or ping bbc.co.uk / router IP again.

did that from a suggestion via the daniweb site, thats how I discovered the pinging issue in the first place, obviously it had little effect.

Im just forcing it to do a factory reset to bin off any Acer software my brother-in-laws mate has reinstalled but might be causing an issue....see how it fairs after that, failing that Ill be getting a free copy of the W7 disc used to install the OS

soooooooooooooooooooooooo feckin tempted.

did the reset, everything worked peachy, web was fast, network was solid, all seemed well.

then acers background shite started feckin installing itself which ultimately resulted in a seemingly endless notification saying "install cleanup" which never ever feckin EVER go's away!

then ontop of that.............. some piece of shite has kicked off Winsat.exe and that's now happily running endlessly too, yes I know its supposed to run once in a while to keep the pc's rating updated but ffs on every single logon and then continuously for two hours using 100% of the cpu with no sign of finishing??? (and no removing/disabling it in task scheduler makes no feckin difference atall).

I was foolish enough to believe all was well for a moment there and I even put my hammer away..... now I'm further annoyed because now I need to go get it out again.

I don't care how blasphemous you techies think it is to say it but I'm sorry............ windows 7 seriously sucks fetid toads bollix when it comes to causing problems for non-techie users like myself, theirs alot to be said for just how user friendly XP seemed compared, even the terribly glitchy Vista never gave me as much hassle as my OS7 systems have to date. :nutter:

Maybe not having the brother in laws dodgy mate install a "free" Windows7 (it is not OS7 ffs lol) might of helped.

There is nothing wrong with the operating system, unfortunately it isn't immune to those guys who think they are IT support but in reality are tinkerers.

I get lots of work my way from such people lol.

Has your Windows 7 that I installed been ok in general use?

aye its been fine barring the initial sound issue and the update sending it off on one last night.

as for the "dodgy mate".....he's a IT support teacher at Riverside college, hence why I didnt qeustion his ability to install a clean usable copy of windows 7.

Users installing aftermarket software on a questionable copy of Windows then blaming the OS. Eek.

installing aftermarket software?..... to what are you referring Sid?, It has genuine windows 7 with product key and the Acer software is the stuff that comes ready supplied with the laptop originally from the factory........ it ain't aftermarket by any means of the word???

As it turns out it appears the Acer software doesn't get along with windows 7 so after factory resetting a second time Ive made a point of limiting the amount of Acer software installed to the bare minimum (Power management, device drivers etc) and so far all seems stable.

Well the soundcard was me forgetting I had removed my professional studio card and thus forgetting to re enable the on board sound, so you see, nothing wrong with Windows 7 installed correct.

The Acer software is indeed third party, it isn't part of the operating system and rarely more than troublesome bloated memory hogging crap that slows your boot time and hangs around waiting to pounce.

Also if as you said this laptop came with XP as standard what makes you sure the software is ok with windows 7?

Sid was probably referring to your "free" Windows 7 reference you made and also the fact you said you might go out and purchase a new copy.

Both comments would lead him to assume your copy installed wasn't purchased as you don't seem to have any way of re installing the copy you have?

ah I get ya, suppose it does sound misleading, well tbf it was still "free" as I didn't pay feckall for it as it was originally done as a favour for my brother-in-law who happily used it with windows 7 right uptil he got a new laptop and returned this one to me after his mate did the wiping/format and re-install of the same windows 7, I didn't ask for any details further than "is it a genuine version or dodgy cause the XP on it is genuine and I rather keep the thing atleast legal" to which he explained it would be installed from his works copy and be fully legit, with product key and support all genuine.

as it was legit and the brother-in-law preferred it I didnt see reason to say no so I gave him the "OK" and thought no more on it.

(btw the lappy originally came with Vista which I hated with vengeance and quickly installed my own genuine XP pro in its place)
