nullspace
Hiya. I'm obviously very new here but have been reading around over the last few days. Since (as i'm sure is the case for many of you!) it's payday in the coming week, i'll want to get started doing some work on my escort and have a few questions. The car is an N reg 1.6 escort 'serenade' in nouveau red. It has roughly 75k on the clock and is pretty immaculate other than a few little bodywork issues: Rust. There is a tiny bit of rust under the rear driver side wheel arch. About an inch or so in diameter and what looks to be surface rust. From what i've read, I could try to wet sand this out and then prime and paint since it's such a small area, but I'm a little more worried about the area underneath the side sills... Now I don't really mean the sills themselves, I mean the strip underneath that has the attach points for the emergency jack. Where the car has been jacked in the past, i imagine, it has crumpled this 'strip' slightly and the result has been corrosion. Parts around this area crumble easily, but it doesn't seem to have penetrated the body, and it still appears to be a 'surface layer' of the strip which is rusting. What are these strips called, for starters? And what can I do, personally, to at least protect them and stop the spread of rust. I don't care about the aesthetics there as its out of sight. Could I simply sand back until I hit good steel and then fill, prime, and paint? Sorry I don't have pictures right now, it's raining pretty heavy outside. That'll do for now I think. My main aim at the moment is protecting the (mostly) rust free body and frame, before I start anything else. Cheers, John

If its not too bad then just stick a wire brush attachment to a drill or grinder and chomp away all the loose crap. Apply some rust killing stuff ( from any good motor store) and then smother will underseal and that should prevent any more nastiness for a while. Its not really worth cutting all out and welding in new unless its completly rotten. Even then its questionable as welding could cost more than the cars worth lol.Not pretty I know, but if its covered up it doesnt really matter.http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx80/the-jonsonator/car003-2.jpg

Didn't think to use the drill... I have a good one lying around I map as well pick up a wire brush attachment. Like you said, it's never getting looked at so it doesn't matter if it's a bit messy - as long as its protected! Cheers

I'll check it out. Do you have a ballpark figure for something like this? Obviously if it turned out to be much worse then naturally i'd expect the price to go up, but just a rough estimate? james08
depends on the finish you want really, ive just done a similar job on my van and put stonechip on the sill then painted over it so its body coloured, you can leave it black if you wanted though, best thing is to come down and ill have a look over it for you and give you the options

If i bring it down sometime late next week would you be able to check in general for rust and give me a quote? If funds allow, i may just go this route. I'll also be looking to (soon) have some parts painted to match the bodywork. I'd probably sand and prime them myself as i've done that sort of stuff before, but i'm in the dark when it comes to lacquering etc. Anyway, i'll just bring the car in if thats okay next week and we could talk about it then. Cheers dude! John
