Simple solution to the rear bumper problem. Cut the hole for the exhaust carefullly with a decent tool. And cover the old hole with some GTi spats

Is the flange at the back of the 1.4 cat in the same place and style as the zetecs, if not then a zetec's aftermarket exhaust wont bolt on without a bit of flange tinkering

exactly what i did used a angle grinder and gently ground out the hole then finished it off with a piece of exhaust pipe just a bit bigger that the tailpipe wrapped in sandpaper and smoothed it out nice and round. lots of trial fitting then fit the spats to cover the old hole :thumb:

Quick question. Is the downpipe from the manifold the same on all models? Wondering because if I can get away with just replacing the back box section instead of the whole exhaust system it won't cost me as much. I literally want to replace my LX back box section for a zetec/gti back box, or aftermarket performance exhaust, because I want to put a zetec rear bumper on it.

escorts use a 3 section system (not including seperated CAT systems)

they are :

Front manifold down pipe (these vary between models significantly enough to not be interchangeable)

Mid-section centre box (basically a silencer with two bits of pipe either end and barring the CAT connection they don't vary much)

Rear silencer and exit(The rear sections are more or less the same across the range with only some exception)

If your looking at using a rear section off another larger engined escort model the only possible issue you may have would be overall exhaust tube bore size, eg: a 1.3L rear section will have a smaller bore than a 1.8L rear section typically.... visually they will overall look exactly the same, using the same route and hanging points.

to get round the bore variance (should it arise) you can always use a "drop-down" exhaust adapter which basically means you trim back the pieces of pipe were the two sections would normally join and insert the size adapter to adjust for the size difference in the bore's..... its a easy job and can be accomplished with a quick hacksaw/grinder session, two exhaust u-clamps and a socket set.

Well, the back section on my exhaust system comes out further to the left, the tail piece at the back which pokes out the end is also longer, and not straight like the zetec back sections, as shown on the previous page...

how the exit pipe leaves the backbox on your current exhaust doesnt really matter, (yours is a standard setup up for lower spec, smaller engined escort, much the same as my own was)

For example:-

If you were to get a backbox section off a 1.8 Gti and try and fit it to your car in its current state you'd have two immediate issues,

1, the exhaust bore size wouldn't match so you'd need to cut in a size adapter were the rear section mates onto the centre section of the exhaust.

2, the exit pipe of the new rear section would not be able to pass out the back of the car as your current bumper is cut for a low spec side exit exhaust system (such as your exhaust system is now)

The first problem is solved much as I mentioned, with a exhaust size adapter that will compensate for the differences in bore size.

The second problem is more of a cosmetic issue but just as easily remedied with some careful trimming of the bumpers lower edge were the exhaust would typically exit once in place (this can be done with something as simple as a hacksaw blade or better still a coping saw, the bumper plastic is incredibly flimsy and easily cut)

I have decided to leave the car untouched and unmodified. Only thing I want to do is fix up the damage on the rear bumper where I reversed into a lamp-post, and some scuffs on the front bumper.

When I have my 1 years no claims and my licence held for a year my insurance costs will go down and I may consider investing in a GTi.

Alright, so if I decide to go ahead with the conversion, I will need to cut the exhaust. Where would be the best place to cut it and put the adapter?

I might be able to get an adapter that fits between the manifold peice and the cat peice (Left of number 1), that's if it's worth replacing the cat with one from a 1.6/1.8. Not sure if there's much difference in the cat converters.
