Why is insurance such an issue now if you were running a 2.5 v6?

I'm guessing that's what the convictions were a result of?

Years of driving illegal then got caught?

See!

"I'm 25, have a TT99 on my full licence, which I passed last month (Got the convictions on my provisional)"

So, we're assuming, none of those cars he was legally allowed to drive?

Less than two months into passing his test I assume these cars were not owned in that time scale.

So, again, we assume that he has started a thread about a load of cars he's been driving illegally?

Yes as I said I assume, with no reply we can only assume.

This was a topic to discuss cars, not my licence or my convictions. I've noticed this to be a problem with the forum. Whilst the members here are generally pretty nice, they tend to go off-topic a lot. If you wanted to know about my convictions why not just PM me and keep the main threads for car talk?

The cars I've owned were insured on provisional except for the Vectra, which I only had a short time as I swapped the Astra for it and sold it on to get the Corsa, but yes I did drive it illegal a few times. And yes, I got caught driving the green Corsa unsupervised one day after I had an argument with the missus and was late for work. No excuse, I could have called up and explained but lacked a bit of sense back then.

I got banned for 6 months, got 6 points (On top of the 3 points I already had for doing 39 in a 30 zone dual carriageway on a 125cc motorcycle), and a £450 fine. This was back in April 2010, since then I've had 125cc motorbikes until I eventually passed my test this October, and got myself a car.

People Fcuk up, rubbish happens, and we all learn. 3 years until my licence is clean again. I'm a fairly safe driver, not a boy racer in anyway even if I do like the sport style over standard.

So now we've got that out of the way can we talk about cars again?

Thanks for the explaination. Perhaps you've got the wrong impression of this forum. We're enthusiasts, but also a community who don't appreciate wide-bois running about with no licence/insurance, so I think the questions were more to check that you'd put that all in the past and were motoring safely and legally now. As said, I've gone through my own spell of motoring misdemeanours (until recently my licence was a lot more colourful than yours), but as long as you come out the other side wiser then it's not an issue.

For what it's worth, having owned numerous Escorts (8 at my last count), I wouldn't spend money going from a 1.4 to a 1.6 Escort if your current one is a nice one. There's more go about it, but you'd get used to it in a week and there's no tuning potential on that 1.6 engine.

The only attraction would be the ease of a 2.0 Zetec engine conversion from the 1.6, which is more complicated from the 1.4. However, a CVH turbo conversion is easier from a 1.4 motor than it is a Zetec... so swings and roundabouts.

I have to give you credit for facing the mob there. Whilst I can't speak for the rest of the forum, as a car enthusiast, I love my car and being able to drive it, I don't love the price of my insurance being hiked up irresponsible youngens who think they know better and drive without insurance or tax, just a bug-bear of mine and I'm sure many others. I appreciate that you have 'seen the errors of our ways' and now joined us on the sensible side I'm sure you'll be p1ssed at the fact that an estimated £90 of you insurance premium is to cover false whiplash claims, £120 to cover claims against uninsured drivers, the amounts we are paying to cover these fools is redonkulous. if people could just stick to the rules, not only would the roads be safer for me to drive my pride and joy, but my premiums would be sweet FA!

anyway, I like your car, Its in really good nick for it's age. the 1.6 will provide more poke per pound but the 0.2l increase is it worth it? if you want to change up, might be worth looking at the 1.8 or a mk5 2L.

did you have any luck swapping the bumpers with the college car? failing that I've seen a couple of front and rear bumpers on ebay for not-a-lot if your still looking. that turbo conversion sounds the way to go.

I'm still in 2 minds about whether to upgrade the car or keep it. I am quite tempted at the 1.8L but it all depends how much I can get hold of one for and how much I can sell mine for. Car will be off the road from February as I can't keep up with the insurance payments at the moment due to only being in temporary work, so I might start saving for a 1.8 and get rid of my current one.

u know that your car (although slow) is a good example of an escort.....personally i wouldnt bother selling it and looking for a new one i would just keep hold of it and make it yours

my 1.6 isnt fast, but then again i dont really care because its my car and ive made it (or working to make it) the way i want

stick it out until you at least get a years no claims

I'll second that - it's a nice motor, take car of it and when you have a few years no claims and gone past 25 (if you haven't already, your premiums will drop and you can trade in a pristeen classic motor for something a little more sporty. plus if your having difficulty affording the insurance on a 1.4, why get a car where your premiums will be even more expensive??

Escorts (atleast decent ones that is) are becoming too far between nowadays, more and more of them are finding their next (and ultimately last) owner being a salvage yard.

what decent 1.4's still about are being quite jealously guarded by current owners around my way..... myself included (my original intention to upgrade my own 1.4's engine was placed on the backburner till such times as I see it worth my while doing and remains so to this day despite already having a perfectly functional and ready to transplant cvh engine sat idly waiting in my back shed alongside the new engine hoist I purchased specifically for the job)

i think all escort are becoming closely guarded by their owners. the few that I've seen my way really are in pristine condition. look after your, they're becoming very rare.

It is a nice car. It does have it's flaws though. Big chip in rear bumper, rust patch that i've managed to cover over but not a great job on the rear passenger side door. Over all the body work is in great condition, I just think when I can afford it, a fresh lick of paint will be in order.

As said in another topic, I honestly don't see the point in selling it now as it seems to be driving well without any problems what-so-ever. I should have it the way I want it by June I think.

Couple of updates. After the escort I had this (I know, but it was very cheap at the time). 1999 Vauxhall Corsa 1.0 12v.

Had a little play around with it, as you do. I wanted to track it and get another car but just ended up getting rid of it anyway.

And now I'm currently driving this, a 1998 BMW 318i.
