blacksofstichill
Thanks Parky! With the head away being sandblasted I turned my attention to the engine mounts - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0236.jpg Cleaned back to bare metal - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0237.jpg Primed and Painted in Gloss Black - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0238.jpg http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0239.jpg I got my good Friend Andrew to sandblast the Cylinder Head for me, it makes a great job on a cast iron head like this and cleans the ports out much better than I could do by hand - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0240.jpg http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0241.jpg http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0242.jpg http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0243.jpg http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0244.jpg http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0245.jpg http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0246.jpg http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0247.jpg This head is going to be converted to run on Unleaded Petrol, so to do that I have to machine out the existing Exhaust Valve Seats, Press in Hardened Valve Seat inserts and cut them to the correct seating angle. Here are the hardened inserts as I bought them - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0248.jpg Here is one of the existing standard exhaust valve seats - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0249.jpg With the insert just laid on top of the seat you can see its a suitable diameter to do the job as it will just fit within the shallow combustion chamber - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0250.jpg http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0251.jpg Inserts like this aren't made for each individual engine, you just buy them from a range of standard sizes and it's up to you to measure the size you need for the job. In this case I was able to get an insert with the right inside and outisde diameter but Ideally I wanted one around 5mm deep as that's all they need to be for this head, however that size was going to take around 4 weeks to arrive which I wasn't prepared to wait. So, these ones I ordered which were available off the shelf were the correct diameters but 9.5 deep rather than 5mm so I machined them down to size on the centre lathe - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0252.jpg With one done you can see the difference - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0253.jpg All done, much better than waiting a month for ones made in this depth - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0254.jpg Cylinder Head onto the Milling Machine to machine the old seats out - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0255.jpg With the Roughing Cutter centralised on the existing Valve Seat it's time to rough out the old seat - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0256.jpg Halfway there - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0257.jpg One seat Machined out to a roughing diameter, I have another cutter ordered to do a finishing cut which will leave the recess in the head the correct size to provide an interference fit when the new seat inserts are pressed into place - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0258.jpg http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0259.jpg

blacksofstichill
fascinating stuff, love it, proper workmanship, which in my opionion is hard to come by these days Thanks, I really appreciate that, glad you're enjoying the thread. Not many people realize just how bad the ports were in old engines! :') Top work as always, jealous you have the tools to put valve seats in! Cheers, yeah the ports aren't too well cast on these at all, thats just the way they all seem to be from that era! Regarding the valve seat inserts, you can buy machines specifically to cut out valve seats for inserts but they're expensive and rarely available second hand unfortunately so I just make use of the milling machine whic to be honest is just as handy. Glad you are enjoying the prgress so far. nice work, really enjoying following this thread, keep it up Thanks, really appreciate that happy to hear you are enjoying it. Great updates as per usual, but PM me your address and I'll send you some latex gloves free of charge, you clatty b*stard Thanks, glad you like the updates! Thanks for the offer of gloves, I've never worn gloves when I'm working, some nights I have to wash my hands in petrol or thinners to get them clean though! Another update for you, with the finishing cutter arriving I was able to machine out the recesses in the head to there finished size. This cutter is basically acting as a reamer to finish the hole off, it isn't removing much material at all. Ready to cut - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0260.jpg After cutting - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0261.jpg http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0262.jpg The first recess finished - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0263.jpg All 4 Exhaust Valve Seats machined out accurately - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0264.jpg http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0265.jpg http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0266.jpg Onto the hydraulic press and it's time to press in the seat inserts - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0267.jpg First insert laid in place ready to be pressed in - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0268.jpg Just starting to ease it in - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0269.jpg And pressed right in - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0270.jpg http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0271.jpg All four inserts pressed in - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0272.jpg You can see a step below the insert where it meets the original casting, rather than leave them like that I dress the step down using a die grinder - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0273.jpg Similarly, you can see step lines in the casting of the inlet and exhaust ports and irregularities in the shape of the ports - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0274.jpg http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0275.jpg So, after a bit of time with the die grinder I've got any steps behind the inserts tidied up and thhe casting flaws smoothed out. Please don't confuse this with porting and polishing, it's just a little bit of work to tidy the casting up, not to increase port size dramatically - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0276.jpg http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0277.jpg http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0278.jpg http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0279.jpg So, that's all the inserts fitted and the casting tidied up but the inserts still need to be cut to the valve angle - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0280.jpg Pilot fitted into the valve guide gives me a centre to work on - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0281.jpg Neway 45 degree carbide cutter will rough the seat down to size - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0282.jpg http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0283.jpg Cutter guided down on the pilot - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0284.jpg After a bit of cutting - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0285.jpg Valve seat roughed down to depth at 45 degress - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0286.jpg http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0287.jpg http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0288.jpg All Exhaust Valve seats roughed down - http://blackengineering.co.uk/images/Mk2-Cortina-1600E-Crossflow-Engine-Reconditioning/0289.jpg
