Ive had many Fords over the years, Im a total addict for classic tin!.. It started from an age of 17 years when i had grown up watching Dad going through 60's fords including Custom cars etc at the time.. when my mates wanted Xr3i and RS Turbo's I went straight in for V8's and V6's and RS Mexico's etc......

These are the Road cars Ive owned/used over the years..

Anglia 105e's " rolled one ".. Escort MK1/2/3/5/6 inc RS2000 and 2 Mexico's.. Capri MK1/3 inc 1.6 GT-XLR , 3000E, 2.0 S , 3x2.8i and a 3 Litre Ghia, Granada MK1/2 a 3 Litre and 2x2.8i V6's

Cortina MK1/2/5 Mk1 was 3 Litre V6, one Lotus with Vulcan engineering built engine bought for £1500 8o yes should have kept it i know!!! The Mk5 was 3 litre V6 Conversion :ninja:

These are some pics random found on an old hard drive which inspired me to try to remember some of them..

The 3 litre Cortina in for a tidy up in my workshop "period year 2000".. Engine spec was Stage 2 heads n Cam plus a steel timing set.. HP oil pump all lightend and balanced.. Cost me a fortune to build and it did 15MPG on a good day if driven carefully!!.. Fantasticly quick and sounded awsome on the 2.5" system.. I owned it 8 years and the body was Solid as feck.. Damn i miss this car :(

Its still owned and used by the guy i sold it to in 2004 8)

The last Escort mk1 I owned.. 1300E , I fitted a 1600 x/f lump with 3 rail Bullet box "AKA 2000E box" .. Engine was Lightend and balanced and ran a stage 2 head and Cam.. It performed great without the economy issues of my previous crossflows running twin 40's

Rover 3500 S V8.. Thats the Manual V8 8) Got it for £200 and ran it 5 years without anything other than normal Servicing.. Mega Classic value and served as great tow car too!

My last Classic ford.. was to get modern economy and 4 doors again as I now had a growing family..

Introducing the MK2 Cortina Zetec project bought in 2005 for £160

out came this which sold for £150 no less :D

whole conversion was made myself including water rail, sump, engine mounts, alternator brackets etc etc etc.. I ran it on a mk1 mondeo engiine loom and desk ECU..

So here's the new engine

I havent got time to show all tonight but... Pull up a chair and see what I did in my pursuit of cheap power

I was building A 2 litre Zetec conversion for an Anglia 105e when a friend rang and said "Ive got a mate selling a MK2 Cortina £250 and its running a 16GT motor etc etc" ..

It was local so I looked at it and bought it for £160. It was a 1968 MK2 Cortina that came with alloys, period high back vinyl bucket seats, 1600E engine- dash and clocks... blah blah blah

Importantly for me though it had four doors and my family commitments were growing at the time..

The shell was surprisingly good having original Sills ,spare wheel well, Rear chassis rails and hangers all rust free and immaculate.. The front had the usual rot in Outriggers and jacking points, front turrets, front valence and cross member too..

Bare in mind this was a time when Scrap metal was under £20 per tonne, so getting cheap modern scrap cars was easy.. So I had the Donor engine intended for the Anglia "2 litre Zetec" from a mondeo I bought for £20 with 90k on the clock.. Yes the whole car was £20!!!!

So lets start some pics of the Conversion in the beginning..

sump is home made and took me 4 days to make "off and on admittedly, which included the pickup and dipstick".. I chose to use the Sierra 1.8 CVH sump as its steel and fitted the block so i could cut it and work on it.. I cut the upper flange off it and welded it to the lower half of a Cortina sump so it would clear steering and X/member .Then welded on wings to increase capacity to 5 litres and baffled it to stop oil surge just like ford did with the escort mk1 rs1600 and mex. I made a new pickup pipe to suit with 4mm clearance from the sump base.. (you can measure clearance using playdoh). If you use the CVH pickup pipe you will need to open up the hole in the flange as its in the wrong place for Zetec easily noticed when placing the gasket on it..

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b34/mk1tina/Zangliasumps4.jpg

So moving around the back the engine needed a water rail.. here's the mocking up templates in tin.. BTW you can see a wing of the baffled Sump too

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b34/mk1tina/Zetecengbox.jpg

That ended as this.. The thermostat is Ford Pinto..

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b34/mk1tina/waterrail1.jpg

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b34/mk1tina/waterrail2.jpg

You see above I used the Cortina Temperature sender unit so I knew the Gauge would read right for the car!

Moving to the front.. Mondeo Alternator mounted on home made carrier.. The belt was a Fiesta Aux Belt using a Escort Water Pump

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b34/mk1tina/zetecaltbkt.jpg

So it was time to pull out the crossflow and sit this in for measuring up..

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b34/mk1tina/rhsidemounted.jpg

Checked Sump details and clearances

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b34/mk1tina/cortinazetecclearancefrt.jpg

then checked bonnet clearance

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b34/mk1tina/cortinazetecfront.jpg

All looked OK so I made the mounts

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b34/mk1tina/Cortinansmount.jpg

Mounted Coil Pack.. Notice HO inlet too :thumb:

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b34/mk1tina/coilpack.jpg

Fitted Starter from Granada DOHC AUTO as the Solenoid would clear the Cross member

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b34/mk1tina/rhmount.jpg

Converted from rod throttle to cable .. Mondeo BTW ;)

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b34/mk1tina/cortinathrottlepeddle.jpg

Clutch was Mk1 Capri 1600GT OHC unit.. It fitted the Bullet 2000E box splines and the Mondeo Flywheel perfectly..

Home made exhaust manifold made using a 12 tonne Pressure bender

Welded back up

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b34/mk1tina/tank3.jpg

Installed with Vauxhaul SRI Fuel pump as it used 10mm feed pipe instead of fords 17mm+

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b34/mk1tina/pump.jpg

battery ended up in the boot as no room in engine bay

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b34/mk1tina/tray2.jpg

Oil filter was tight to chassis so changed to CVH as on right

Conversion working and running in its infancy
