mk6 van - a short project

removed the interior on this today. each and every job is done twice as it's mirrored on the old van as various bits are better on there and are to be changed over. also we went on the bike to a bike meet which held up play for a while, anyone interested in a picture of that? it's cleaner than the work area in a clean room!

anyways, the floorpan looks rot free, i'm not in a rush to cut any of it out:

so the install wiring and re-fit starts tomorrow.

not as much progress as planned or hoped for today. this morning saw the strip and re-fit of the old van ready for sale. after some lunch however i was outside getting on with the new van and was assaulted by a mad woman. she managed to put 3 cuts in my arms! i warned her that she was about to be knocked out but thought better of it and called the police. missus managed to follow her home to find out where she lives but the ensuing police business and paperwork has taken up to now. turns out she's known to them and has mental illness issues, just a good job i didn't lay into her.....

not bad, just nail scratches. all drew blood though. never been involved with anything like it before, i wasn't aware of her at first then she just suddenly went off on one about a cat and went for me.... i'm not going to press charges, her family say that she will, from now on, be placed into day care. right, work started again last night but i need a little more help...

5mm wheel spacers went on and the wheels clear the inner arches now, great!

a pair of new mirrors arrived too as the offside mirror glass was broken and both mirror casings had scratches. although the new mirrors fit the adjustment is different on the new mirros so that the original rubber cover doesn't fit over it:

here's the difference between the 2 on the outside, first the new then the original mirror:

any ideas what's happening here?

so i left that for the time being and started running some cables in. first up a fused power cable from the battery area:

which will go to a distribution block...

and 2 speaker cables from the doors to the amp for the front:

more to come.

The new mirrors are usually found on that of a mk6 escort, 1996 onwards. The bigger square'er ones are from a mk5/5b, pre 96. Although they both fit the same door, I'd imagine you need the insides from a mk6 as well to match the actual mirror. The 'rubber cover your used to will be a solid plastic moulding on the mk6 ( its the whole triangle section) :thumb: Edited by lee grout

brilliant - thank you! i am beginning to see this forum as most excellent.

security work has started:

this is not as easy as it used to be - ford used to make their keys from steel that was easily weldable, these days there's some additive or other that means i had to hunt out a specialist welder for this as my usual biker mechanic guy tried and failed.

some more help if anyone can oblige? i don't think that the key above will fit into a meta key fob. will the transit key like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-FORD-MONDEO-...=item257a28c55e

be able to take a meta circuit board and, perhaps more importantly. can it be cut to suit an escort?

more progress today. firstly the rest of the audio cables were run in. not as neat and tidy as i would have liked but there are a few...

and the rubber floor mat was fitted. this was taken from my other van, i spent a good while cleaning this to a good enough standard to suit the rest of the van:

http://portchesterpropertymaintenance.co.uk/images/van/cables5.jpg

the centre console went back in:

http://portchesterpropertymaintenance.co.uk/images/van/cables6.jpg

and the head unit was wired and fittedL

some mdf boards were chopped out and screwed through to the rubber mat:

http://portchesterpropertymaintenance.co.uk/images/van/cables8.jpg

which allowed the fitting of the amps. (well, very nearly, it started to rain and i had to give up for the day)

forest - i'm not sure on the wheel choice either. i ran orion ghia / xr4i pepperpots on the last van and they seemed to suit it much better and look bigger, despite being the same size. they are in the shed and may be changed over at some point. i didn't make a straight swap as all 4 toyos on them were nearing the end of their lives... at least the mk5 xr3i jobs that are on there are completely and totally mint and, to be fair, they look better in reality than in the pictures. when it's complete i'll take some better photo's and post them here.

i re-fitted the seats this morning, via a good clean, the same kind of good clean that everything has been subjected to:

http://portchesterpropertymaintenance.co.uk/images/van/seats.jpg

and the baulk head panel went in too. the new van had an upper cage which i liked but somebody had butchered it about so it was rejected in favour of this:

http://portchesterpropertymaintenance.co.uk/images/van/baulkhead.jpg

the doors have been stripped for some time now:

http://portchesterpropertymaintenance.co.uk/images/van/door.jpg

but have now been cleaned. this was a time consuming and messy task, that ford sikoflex stuff is horrendously sticky and difficult to remove:

http://portchesterpropertymaintenance.co.uk/images/van/door2.jpg

for now i have re-fitted the factory speakers as there's more work planned for the doors before the audio work on them commences.
