Bodged escort engine

Prickley

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks I am newly registired and would much appreciate it if some one can give me some advice, my cousin asked me to help him with his newly accuired 1996 ford escort 1.8 Gli, or so he thought.

It turns out it is fitted with a 2.0 (NGA) block and a 1.8 cylinder head(silver top) and head gasket which is why the head gasket failed

My first question is, will a 2.0 headgasket seal on a 1.8 cylinder head?

My Second qeustion is, if we need to redo the bottom end, i will can get the 2.0 block re sleeved back to 1.8 but will the std 1.8 pistons fit on the 2.0 connecting rods.

I have done quite a lot of homework and i cannot locate a 2.0 cylinder head or a 1.8 block or a complete 1.8 engine in my part of the world, so even though i know it would have been easier it is not an option.

I can however get std 1.8 pistons and piston rings

Some back ground on the vehicle, my cousin bought the car as a so called escort sport 1.8 GLI, he has been driving it for 6 months now the head gasket failed due to the gasket not sealing properly on the engine block, after removing the cylinder head i saw that it was a 2.0 bolck and it is worn to the extent that it has 0.60mm clearance between the piston and sleeve.

Any help and advice appreciated

Hi,

Because you said that the engine has a Silver Top head I suposse is a Zetec.

You can run a 2.0 block with a 1.8 head, you would have a bigger CR, but is possible. In fact the 2.0 and 1.8 heads are quite similar, same valves indeed.

If you have a 2.0 block I will fit a 2.0 head gasket also you can put a MLS head gasket, which ones are used in the Black tops.

I don´t think that would logic or feasible to rebore the block to 1.8 STD, because that requires to add a lot of material to the bores.

Regards,

Thanks Condor, and yes it is a zetec (sorry i forgot to add that bit) my main concern is whether the 2.0 gasket wil seal off the water jackets on the 1.8 head so that it wont leak between the bore and the water jacket.

I would prefer to use a MLS gasket  since it wont fail as easily but wil the black top gasket fit on the silvertop?

black top gasket would fit a silver top engine

it if were me i would use 2l gasket as the 1.8 would overhang into the cylinder itself and get burnt up which is what probably led to the failure

just out of interest is it running on 1.8 engine management or 2.0?

deffo go 2l gasket then, get the ecu code, its on the sticker on the ecu itself, that will tell you what management its using.

i would have thought it would run a bit rough on a 1.8 management, just like my 1.8 does as its currently on 1.6 management until i can get out there with my multimeter and wire cutters!

  • 2 weeks later...

Update:

I finally got all the parts and got it started, but it does not run smooth so i believe its on a 1.8 management (i didnt find the ECU yet)

Now i have a new problem, it boils within minutes after starting it and its not compression getting into the water, i tried bleeding the air out but it still boils, i removed the thermostat but it boils, i have replaced the thermostat but it boils.

The only logical explanation i can think of is that the water pump is not circulating the cooling water

Any ideas welcome as i am at my wits end and not looking forward to taking the waterpump off if there is nothing wrong with it

Is it possible for the waterpump to fail without leaking?
