Idling at 500rpm then if you build the revs up slowly it's fine right up to 6500rpm but the minute you give it any beans it Coughs Splutters and tries to Backfire !!! Sounds to me like a fuel problem and fuel pressure check would have been the first test. It seem's to me it could be a possible fuel pump issue. A Fuel Pressure test that a local garage should be able to perform will establish this as the zetec has a valve on the fuel rail, making this really easy.
