Posted October 11, 201410 yr As the title, my fan hasn't been working for a while... I've checked all fuses, bridged the connection (and it works) tried another fuse box and changed the fan switch. What else can I try?Could it be an ecu problem?... reason I think it might be is because, I can't remember what I was doing at the time butI had the fan switch disconnected whilst the car was running and I reconnected whilst the car was still running (pretty stupid i know), which resulted in a pop as the terminals met! It hasn't worked since!
October 11, 201410 yr fan switch is in the top hose, many people change the sensor in the thermostat which is for the ecu
October 11, 201410 yr Author I've changed the switch in the top hose which is why im confused that it still isn't working....
October 12, 201410 yr Sounds like a break in the wire. It is it's own wiring loom that connects to the main loom for earth and power. They can get brittle so worth doing a continuity check as this is really the only thing it can be if the sensor is brand new. Have you tried bridging the contacts on the sensor plug
October 12, 201410 yr Author Yep and it kicks straight in when I turn it on. Thats why I'm confused and running out of options, im not entirely clued up on this I've only done what I've searched on forums etc so any more ideas would be muchly appreciated! I suppose the next thing I could try is another sensor as im not sure if its a ford part thus not having the correct thermal range? I got it from a local motorfactors and the guy literally passed me a part over the counter without a box.
October 22, 201410 yr If you run the car until it gets to the stage where the fan cuts in,have you got access to a multi-meter to test the hose switch to see if it's closed.
October 23, 201410 yr Author I could get hold of one... but how would I test it to see if it was closed???
October 24, 201410 yr Set the meter to test for continuity and when the car comes up to temp. place the leads across the switch terminals and if you get a reading the switch is closed, and working,if not, it's open circuit and needs replacing. The way you describe the fault I would say the switch is faulty.A further test you could do is place the sensor part in a pan of boiling water and repeat the above test.Â
October 24, 201410 yr Author Thanks ok I'll give that a try. I have put a new sensor on though and it still isn't working. I'll give it a try anyway and see what results I get as I suppose that way I can see if there is something else going wrong if the sensor is actually ok....
October 24, 201410 yr So if you short out the plug, the fan runs? You've fitted two new switches and these don't work? Are you running the car up to temp. long enough for the switch to kick in?
October 24, 201410 yr Author Short the plug and it works.Only fitted one new switch upto now. Car is a daily runner so it gets upto temp everyday when I get stuck in traffic on the way home so I have to sit with the blowers on full whack to stop overheating! :-(
October 24, 201410 yr Ok,thought you'd fitted two switches.Try the meter and let us know what you find.
