1.6 zetec tuning

Hi guys, just picked up my new daily, something I can have a play with to keep me occupied. It's a 2000 escort mk6 1.6 zetec. I was wondering what else I could do to it, it currently sits at 80k, well serviced has a stainless manifold, decat, ss system, k&n with good cold air feed, iridium plugs and uprated leads. Oh and I run it on shell Vpower. I doubt there is much more potential in it, unless anyone knows of any other little tricks lIke if 1.8 cams or tb will fit it?

 

I am thinking of dropping a 1.8 in there at a later date but quite fancy seeing what more can be done to the 1.6 without going silly.

 

Any tips or ideas would be much appreciated guys.

Nothing you do will improve it's performance, bar turbocharging or nitrous. You're wasting your money putting super unleaded in it too, it's giving you nothing.

the only other thing to fit would be a superchip, but that won't give you any more power, just makes it drive better as scott fitted one to his 1.6

Do they even still do superchips for escorts?

I've seen rs2000 ones come up for sale before in the classifieds, eBay etc

the 1600 is limited on mods, could throw in some 1.8 105 cams maybe?

 

my chip was a collins powerchip and yes they do still make then, i believe they are around £120, but you could buy an entire escort 1.8 for that and transfer the engine over. the 1.8 has so many more options

Thanks Scott, that's the route I will probably take later on. Even a 105 would Work, would be nice to have a tad more torque.

 

I didn't think cams from 1.8/2.0 worked with the 1.6, thought I had read this on here years ago.

they are all identical dimensions, and as far as im aware the valve springs etc are the same.....or i hope they are because im using my 1.6 springs and tappets in my 130

in fairness my 1.6 went fairly well for what it was, decat exhaust, mongoose catback, smooth hard pipe air intake with a MASSIVE filter and a collins powerchip. definitely quicker than it was when i got it

Yer, they seem to move well. I may try a hard pipe on it actually. It has all its breathing sorted bar that. Is there anyway of finding out lift/duration of stock cams? That way it might be easier to narrow down which ones will work best.

A nitrous kit would be a barrel of laughs, and if it goes band just chuck in a 1.8 for poke :-P

So how simple will be swapping the 1.6 for a 1.8? what's involved? I'm guessing the ecu will be needed from the 1.8, other than that is it just a straight swap over. I would imagine I Could probably pick up a decent 105 lump for less than 100 quid these days.

Ideally yes that would be great. Only thing is I have to many cars and not enough room lol. Might be better waiting untill someone is breaking one and get a job lot of bits to complete the swap.
