Let me no how you get on Simon as I have just got today a mk6 3 door but 1.4i engine . Currently researching what options there are to get over 200 bhp. 250 +. Would be nice but not sure what engine changes there are or affordable builds

Good luck

Some form of turbo will be needed. 250+ won't be seen from a regular ST170 engine without insane money.

Thanks for reply I may think about the st engine too this 1.4i is to slow ..but at mo I'm doing bits and bobs lol fitting whale tale on mk6 fabricating rear lights may do smooth boot unless there's a change in plans and getting bushes lower arms all sorted as car is a good base need some rear seats to but that's bottom of list but for now I will look in to the st170 see what's involved and what gains can be achieved thankyou

How easy is it to fit an ST170 engine into a Escort mk6 1996?

Simon.

The bracket for the PAS and alternator needs modifying to clear the water pump outlet since it's different to the silvertop, no biggie.  I found a load of wiring info from a guy that successfully used the ST170 OEM ECU to run the engine with no errors.

Sitech made a guide which covers the basics.

The Focus sump doesn't need changing so ignore anything about that, it's just unnecessary hassle.

Sitech, Burton Power and other tuning firms can supply the conversion parts.

The ST170 bottom end has forged pistons and sinter forged rods so it's stronger that the standard 2.0 bottom end but the compression ratio will be too high unless you use a decompression plate (might be better avoided) or low comp pistons.  I'd be interested in set of ST170 pistons for my N/A Blacktop but I'm dirt poor at the moment.

I came across this 1.8 bottom end that has already been coverted to ZVH spec and has low comp pistons.  Says it could do with honing the bores and new piston rings.
