I have a computer in my room and want to get it online using the broadbean connection on the computer in the room below.

I have been on www.overclockers.co.uk and found a router and cables. Will i need anything else, i.e software?

Will it be possible to use my computer while the other (main computer) is switched off?

Thanks clever people 8)

If you got windows XP then it should just "work" once you've plugged in all the cables.

Did on mine anyway!

I have the belkin router :thumb:

yes, in a way, u need to make sure u get a router with a built in modem. that will hold a connection permanently, then set the internet gateway (lan settings) to connect via the IP address of the router, :thumb:

Do they work independantly?

or do they both need to be switched on?

Independantly. The modem is on always, and the router is on always. But either PC can be off.

Think I got it from Office World oor Staples or somewhere, was about £40 I think, probably cheaper online though.

Only problem I've had with it is it won't allow you to do voice chat on MSN messenger for some reason X(

only ADSL routes have built in modems ;) ;) plus if could get broadband modems built into routes u have to go throught the process of telling ur ISPaa ur new mac address,

i have a Linksys BEFSB11 and Linksys EFAH05W 4 port hub (so if i wanted to add more computers i can chnage the hub and still keep the router.

and im using the Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem free with NTL

this is how a router works and stops things like attacks on ur computer

normal setup is

INTERNET >>> MODEM >~(on ip address, to easy find ur computer)>> UR COMPUTER

through a router (my setup)

INTERNET >>> MODEM >>>(normal ip adress) ROUTER >(here the router now makes its OWN ip address for each computer on the network, making it impossible to identify ur computer fomr ur main ip address)>> HUB>>> MY COMPUTER/BROS/MUMS/MY SERVER

hope that helps, plus they act as hardware firewall,

and u can then share ur files on ur computer and optical drives( DVD/CD-RW) to other computers and printers also

all with XP thats has no problem at all sorting this it wont nou got a router in line

routers r generally better, but not the only choice, u cud just get a wireless LAN setup, no cables or anything. u wudnt be able to use the net on ur pc if the other has the modem and is switched off tho. adsl routers have modems tho, my m8 has 1 and u can use the net on any pc no matter wot cuz obviously the router has the modem, if how ever ur on cable or tele2 then id prob go with wireless lan, but as sed b4 u will need the other pc on.

as for setting up a lan to serve the house, just go into the network properties of the pc with the modem, right click on the modem's icon, properties and then advanced, choose share this network connection. comp will auto set itself up then.

now on urs u go into network properties, right click on the wireless network card icon and choose properties, tcp-ip properties and set it to auto obtain ip. restart ur pc to make sure and u shud be set up.

Well im confused now, I think i will buy a cheap one and have a play :D

summit like this will do ya fine,

http://www.dsl-warehouse.co.uk/product.asp?pr=ST510v4&pm=415

that will connect upto 4 comps, uses a CD to configure each comp easily to connect, can be used with DHCP (ignore that if u aint bothered lol) i use a similiar one but without the extra 3 ports :thumb:

you dont need to inform ya ISP of any changes either, (BTW these work best on adsl thru a BT line, not sure about the cable stuff cos i dont supply it :D )
