My bloody car broke! I put my foot on the clutch on Friday in Asda car park in Carlisle to be greeted by a crunch.

The clutch pedal on Escorts has either a ratchet & Pawl or a manual bolt adjuster. Many cars were modified from the ratched & pawl to the bolt type, mine being one of them.

Either way, the cable comes through the bulkhead and is pulled round a plastic semi-circular "lever" shall we say? This pivots on the same pin as the pedal does. Basically the pedal's either connected to the ratchet or there's a bolt screwed through it, which operates this lever. On mine, the bolt is basically pushed against the lever, and that's what works the clutch.

Anyone with any mechanical sense knows that a metal bolt pushing against plastic is gonna break the plastic eventually, and that's what happened to me. I'm hoping the new parts (clutch cable and this lever) appear tomorrow as I'm going to Aberdeen tomorrow night for exams Tuesday morning. If the parts don't appear, i'm in the s**t, really. My first option is to get a workshop van for a couple of days. My second is to get an insurance cover note on my Grandfather's car. My third is a hire car (I know that's a £200 down deposit then £25 a day, so it'd cost me £50 + fuel).

Anyone else had this bit break on their car? Or is it just me who can break it.

yes common and not easy to do with a dodgy back.

We took the drivers' seat out of mine to make life easier. took 2 hours to get the thing out. Should be about the same to put it all back in, in theory. I'm working early tomorrow, catching a bus at 5am so i can get finished at 2 and get the car back together again in time for going away. Should hopefully be fixed up by 5 tomorrow evening. Then it's a 3-hour trip up to Aberdeen.

I didn't know they were common to breaking. I knew the ratchet and pawl was, but not this one.

Anyway, wish me luck that my parts arrive!

depends where you go, some places say 18, some say 21.

That's why it's my last option!

Company car/van is probably the safest bet if my parts don't arrive.
