Teribus Posted November 21, 2004 Posted November 21, 2004 Well, most of you will know about my old escort, the MK6 M-reg 1.8TD Ghia I raved on about. The injection pump started to go. I traced it down to that as I tried all other possibilities, and none worked out. at up to £700 to get it reconditioned, i decided not to overhaul my pump as it was too expensive, given the value of the car. So, minus her Ghia grille & road tax, it was traded in for a Focus. I got £300 for the Escort, which wasn't too bad, I'd paid £650 for it and had 20,000 miles. Well, the other day, I found out the garage hadn't scrapped the car, they sold it on! In fact, they sold it on for more than I paid for it in February! They did have £800 in the window (!!!!!!!) but dropped to £700 to get the sale. So some poor guy parted with £700 to buy a M-reg 1.8TD Ghia Escort with 142,000 miles on the clock and a goosed injection pump. Worse than that, the guy that bought it wants my boss to fix it for him. The Escort's trying to come back and haunt me!!!! -T PS he might arrive here, the car still had it's EVO stickers when I last saw it, so if the guy's got a computer, there's every likelyhood he'll come here to try n trace the car's history

For a kick off (I'm guessing, anyway) it's been crashed and repaired at some point. The fog light front bumper was retro-fitted (Took the switch out the dash and met half a dozen scotch locks!), the nearside front wing was new and the headlight was also new. Plus, there was a wire running in the engine bay, which i discovered led to the starting wire. Methinks the immobiliser was bypassed. The MK6, as far as i know, always came with the red chip keys. Mine didn't have a red chip, yet it all worked fine. I'd even guess that it had been stolen and smashed (the steering column wasn't fitted straight, and when i took the cowling off there was a bit of old broken cowling still screwed on there!!) Methinks i'm better rid of it! It'll do someone as a runaround if they got it running, but as a cheap runaround, you're gonna have to spend too much money Poor guy -T

Teribus Posted November 23, 2004 Author Posted November 23, 2004 Hmm, yeah. Still, the 'history' behind the poor running engine is purely my fault, i've decided. I changed the fuel shut-off solenoid on it, and i'm convinced i let dirt get into the injection pump. And voila. a few thousand miles later, the thing is running completely like c**p. Actually, after changing the solenoid, i drove to aberdeen and the poor running started up there. It just kept getting worse n worse. I guess I should've checked out my car's history before buying it, it might have proven it was stolen. But then again, who's to say it isn't honest enough? Maybe a van bashed into the car in a car park. And rather than go for the original bumper, the owner decided to go for a fog light bumper? Maybe the key broke in the ignition, therefore a second hand ignition was fitted? I don't know, there could be so many explanations, but of course, putting everything together: The odd wire in the engine bay, the broken cowling still screwed on under the other cowling, possibly the fact that the tailgate could never be opened using the key? The fact that, despite being a diesel, the fuel cap said "unleaded". Strange, really. Then again, it's possible the engine was transplanted into what was originally a petrol car? I don't know, and i would know if i'd have done a check, but hey! it's not my problem now. -T
