Just when you thought my uni couldnt get any more stupid i got this email the other day.....

Saturday 23rd of April was ST GEORGE'S DAY.

Your Student's Union Executive has decided that to celebrate St.George's

Day would incite racial tensions with respect to the upcoming General

Elections. They claim that the British National Party have hijacked St.

George's Cross as their political symbol, and that by running any event

associated with St. George's Day would send out the wrong message and

attract the local BNP group.

However myself and many other students I have spoken to disagree with this

decision. St. Georges Cross belongs to the English people and not to any

one political viewpoint. This has surely been demonstrated over the past

few years with international sport inspiring the Englsh spirit. Thousands

of people proudly waved the English flag after the success of the England

Rugby Union team during the World Cup. Does this mean they were all members

of the BNP? I doubt it. And to suggest that the millions of fans who buy

England football shirts each year (which display St. George's Cross) do so

out of anything other than national pride is ludicrous.

In fact the BNP uses the Union Jack as its own and NOT St. George's Cross,

but any association between the two can only be reinforced if we hide away

from it. By celebrating St. Georges Day in defiance of the BNP we can only

serve to reclaim what little hold the BNP has on St. Georges Cross.

Why is it as an English University we have previously celebrated Australia

Day, St. Andrew's Day and regularly celebrate St. Patrick's Day, but shy

away from celebrating our own national day.

So if you're English, not Racist and wish to let the Student's Union

Executive know that, then please enter your name below and forward this

email to the Executive (email addresses below). And even if your not

Engish but think this policy is absurd then feel free to also forward

email to the executive. And please forward it to other students so that

everyone's voice can be heard.

WTF does it matter? They wouldn't argue if you put up a "Vote labour" banner or same...but BNP they do! Everyone is entitle to support there own political party - that is what it is all about.....if you are racist/ sexist or whatever..then that is your own view formed from your own beliefs!

Unfortunately, it is all for everyone but the countrys own! However it has been said that we are the "ethnic minority"

If they don't like our own flag being shown, then they should pee off back to there own country! :vangry:

fcuking disgusting, cant even celebrate it in our own country.

we need a mass cull here soon..... :vangry:

political correctness gone fcuking mad X( :nutter: :nutter: :nutter: :nutter:

I hope someone who isn't white, calls me "white" - love to see how much the police would deal with my complaint of racism!

It's ridiculous attitudes such as this that cause racist feelings where they may have been none previously. In my opinion, they should just be ignored as the utter codswallop they are!

Penny

you should be able to celebrate st. georges day on the 23rd of april when it is

This country has got out of hand and is a fcuking disgrace.

I agree with the BNP's views and they will be getting my vote come the election :thumb:

Spot on Mr W

id love to see what the BNP would do if they had 4 years in charge

but they are never going to get the chance, as people are too scared to vote for them and feel that people will "have a go" at them for the way they vote
