Mk6 Si Ross Posted October 22, 2005 Posted October 22, 2005 following a mondeo around the Northampton ring road last nite and its got a boot badge in the sytle of normal Mondeo badging eg: TDCi but says SCi just looked it up and its just a new 1.8 petrol thats more refined and uses their 6 speed gearbox "This is Ford's first production direct-injection petrol motor which, combined with a six-speed 'box, manages to find the automotive engineer's holy grail by using about seven per cent less fuel with lowered carbon dioxide emissions (down from 21 to 18 per cent company car tax) while having the spin-off benefit of producing about four per cent more peak power over the existing and conventional 1.8-litre Duratec motor. Unsurprisingly, there's a price to pay for this advancement. Spec for spec, a 128bhp 1.8 SCi Mondeo will cost the same as a 143bhp 2.0 Mondeo to buy, plus it'll take at least 18,000 miles before the 39.2mpg fuel economy benefits over the existing 36.2mpg 1.8-litre model are realised, a guesstimation complicated by the current 1.8 and this new 1.8 not being available in the same model spec. But before becoming embroiled in the SCi's 120-bar fuel pressures, asymmetrically recessed piston crowns, variable swirl control valves and four-electrode surface-gap coil-on-spark plug technologies, let's take a peek at some of the bits we can see."
