Posted April 26, 200618 yr Hello, I have a 1.6 MK5 Ford Escort LX, ever since I've had it the temperature gauge hasn't worked, the cooling system works though. I had a look under the bonnet and i found this wire which connects to something around the radiator but I can't find the corresponding part of the loom to reconnect it, does anyone know where it is? sorry about the bad picture it was impossible to get a good one with it being dark outside. I'll get a good one when it's light out.
April 27, 200618 yr on the thermostat housing (black box with big pipe from radiator going into it) underneath the big pipe is another temperature sensor. this if for the dial in the car. check all the wires are connected to it (2 in total)
April 27, 200618 yr Author Hello, the temperature sensor is wired up fine, faulty do you think? There's 3 wires wrapped up in insulating tape, 2 are the thermostat for the gauge and one is the rogue wire, it doesnt come from the thermostat though, I dunno where it comes from it goes all the way back to the other side of the engine bay and then i loose it. Is there anyway I can test to find out if the thermostat for the gauge is bust? I took some just incase anybody can tell me what it is.
April 27, 200618 yr got any better photos of the actual connection on the end of the wire. escorts do have wires that are not connected to anything, just there for ancillaries ie air con. try unplugging the gauge as i think this should make the temperature gauge read hot but i dont know for sure.
April 28, 200618 yr I'll ave a look in my motor later but i really dont recognise that connector. maybe off the gear box or something. as regards the temp gauge, i take it you havent got any spare dials to test with, most likely fault is that sensor, can't remember the price but get a new one from ford. i wouldn't bother with one from a scrappy.

Ok if the gauge fails to read after engine warmed up and the fuses are ok, turn off the engine and unplug connector and use a bit cable to ground the connector to a clean bit metal (bare metal) on the engine. Switch on the ignition BUT DO NOT START if the gauge reads hot renew the sender, if the gauge still does not work the circuit may be open or the gauge may be faulty. Taken from haynes manual hope this helps Dave
May 2, 200618 yr Author Ah excellent, finally got round to removing everything in my way and it was the temperature sender. Thanks for the help, really appreciated.
