Just to see what everyone else's opinions are on the matter, why do you personally upgrade your escort brakes?

I'm doing it because personally i think escort brakes are a pile of poo and they give me no confidence, fade within two roundabouts and, for the more contraversial cosmetic reason too. I believe that if i had to brake sharply, i'd rather have 300mm fronts and rear discs than drums and 240mm fronts, and that braking was an important part of the whole performance upgrade thing for fast road driving (later braking, more confidence etc.)

Lee's opinion was that escort brakes were perfectly fine, never faded and that if i needed to brake sharp then i wasn't a very good driver  He also thinks that brakes could never be a cosmetic enhancement.

What are people's thoughts?

i shall be upgrading to rs2000 front brakes soon.

i am doing it for a little extra size (cosmetics) and also for better stopping power. never know when you need to stop sharpish. also it means i will be able to brake later equalling a fast lap time round my private test track (preston ring road :P )

becase most of the escorts are driven harder than they were designed to be as such, also if u up the power you want to be able to stop it, and i agree they do look good :D

one of the reasons i find tho is later, harder breaking.

If you were to be racing something the later you can brake the more advantage you gain :)

I agree with you dave, escort brakes are poo, last 2 vauxhalls i had were so much better than my escorts brake wise which is why im upgrading to rs2000 :D
Had many a brown pant moment from the brakes fading. :D

It’s as much the pad type and fluid that matters

Big brakes wont make jack if the pads/fluid aren’t suited :O

Saying that, any increase in pad//disc area is an advantage :)

Trust me, rs2k callipers & discs will make a big difference over standard ones 8)

in all my times rallying i have been on std sized disks and pads (of mintex breed ) and std calipers and have not really found them to fade,

although any more power than i have now and the brakes will have to be largerv

yes, I think doing it for cosmetics is stupid :thumb:

I'll also add that I done 5 laps of Brunters, braking from 120 to 40 5 times in about 5 mins in a heavy estate with standard brakes, and they never faded.

I'll also add Ross never had anything more than (crap) aftermarket standard size brakes in his beast, and they were fine  :thumb:

I'm partially with Lee R as escort brakes don't fade, not even when you've got another escort on a metal pole behind you :thumb: but I'll be upgrading mine anyway as IMO if you up the power you need to have up the power of the brakes too.
IMO if you up the power you need to have up the power of the brakes too.

I agree there to a point, hence I uprated mine when I had the RS lump in...

but on a standard turbo diesel....

Have to agree with that as my derv only ever had standard brakes (inc. Small drums) and was fine :thumb:

Before I did the engine swap I knew the brakes needed upgrading. On one occasion of particularly late braking, I managed to cook the calipers- the tops had been glowing red! :)) Altho to their credit they did stop me landing up on a roundabout, but after heating them up that much and prob boiling some life out of the fluid, it was deffo time for an overhaul :thumb:

It all depends on how hard you tend to drive really but I'd rather have much better braking performance than what is required. I got 300mm fronts and discs on rear which are all dotted up and I'm well pleased with the way it stops :thumb:

i am changing mine to rs as i want better brakes, cant say its really cosmetic reasons because is only 20mm bigger, and you cant really see my brakes behind my wheels
