Steering Lock

After the recent stealing of my car, we're getting back to "normal".

 

It is apparent that the "would be thieves" did not break the steering lock.

However at present time the steering lock doesn't come on automatically when the key is removed and the wheel turned.

If I remove the barrel the steering lock works just fine.

with the barrel in the steering lock doesn't "snap back" but you you push on the back (the bit that goes into the ignition switch) the steering lock will then come on.

 

Any ideas?
