Norm W
I've had my mk6 escort 2 weeks and have been inundated with problems since I got it. It's a 1997 P reg 1.6 16v Si. Most serious are these two: Rattle from the engine bay, seems to originate around the power steering pump area. I need to know how to check it is definitely the pump, is it possible to get an alternator belt for a non-power steering car to fit and see if the rattle goes away before changing the pump? Also need to know difficult this is for someone with a haynes, socket set and 0 experience in this kind of thing... More serious is last night is decided it was going to hesitate/misfire under acceleration, say, coming off a roundabout at 25 in 3rd, put foot down for dual carriageway and it "kangaroos/judders" down the road...now I *think* I need to be looking at plugs, plug leads and the coil pack but unsure how/what to do. Also my handbrake needs adjusted, now do I adjust it at the drums or the lever? As i think you can do both/either... Need to know how easy and how much £££ i'm looking at....thanks. Craig855S
1.What kind of rattle, it could be the belt cover, make sure the screws are on ok 2.Check plugs, then change plugs, failing that change the leads (shud always service a car when u buy it anyway) failing that, get a coil pack, put some redex in ur tank aswell to make sure ur injectors arent blocked Plugs are easy to change, buy some gooduns from halfords and instructions are on packet.make sure u dont mix ur HT leads up when u take them out of the cover 3.Handbrake adjusts at the lever,i think it also adjusts somewhere else to,but do the lever first
Norm W
1. I don't know how else to describe it, it follows engine speed and is sortof a ticking/rattling sound, makes the car sound like a diesel/mk3 fez. It seems worse at tickover just afetr I start the car but I'm not toally sure. 2. Right well, upon pulling two of the HT leads up there's what appears to be OIL sitting in a puddle around the top of each plug, that ain't right is it? New plugs and leads is going to be £50 or thereabouts I figure. I managed to drive it for a bit earlier without it misfiring by being very gentle on the throttle, as soon as you give it some gas it starts jerking though.... Craig855S
change the rocker cover gasket, change the plugs and take it from there rocker gasket is an easy change,HT leads out the way, just take all the bolts out of the top of the rocker, then lift the rocker off, swap the gaskets and re-fitwhile the covers off get to the plugs easier, clean the oil up before changing em,and make sure u put them in to the correct torque

Trig
£50! chuffin nora get down to your local motor factor, you know, the ones that have stickers in the window say in gaskets, oils, filters and all that. make sure you get the fluid out of the rocker area, that is usually what kills the sparks and leaves you with one or more less cylinders. Norm W
Sorted New rocker gasket and plugs and we're running sweet. My power steering pump pulley is missing a bolt and the 2 left in were loose so I need a bolt but my rattle is a lot better now the remaining 2 are now tight Just got all the other shake, rattle and rolls to look at/ignore
