Host of problems:

dansGTI

Recommended Posts

The car is a 1998 Escy Gti. Its done 94k. The car had received a de-cat from its former owner, and a Pipercross induction kit. I cleaned the exhaust tip, and within 2 miles it was BLACK with sooty residue.

Im thinking the exhaust has something to do with it........but i want opinions!

Problems noted so far:

* Excessive smoke on acceleration (its just grey, not blue)

* Air filter is soaked in oil (cleaned it up a bit now)

* Breather pipe to cam cover was blocked (now fixed this)

* Engine down on power generally

* The oil looks crap. Will be servicing it tomorrow!

* Excessive noise coming from power steering pump area. Like a whining sound.

The car also idles badly when cold (fluctuates from 500rpm to 2000rpm, almost like somebody is revving it then taking their foot off, then repeating it etc.)

But when warm, it idles okay (still high though at 1100rpm). The car seems to drive relatively well apart from the smoke that blinds the driver behind................. But under normal driving, its okay.

THIS IS A MATTER OF THE CARS LIFE OR DEATH.

You could have a point. I really want to get this car back up where it belongs. I have plans for it, but i need the engine to be okay, just for a little while. I really love the idea of some rally decals, stripped interior, throttle bodies............... Make this car that little bit special. But in order for that, i would like it to be useful for a while! 8)

It would look AWESOME Dan!

Matching graphite decals with anthracite 17' MO's would get my vote on a white car! 8)

If the engine has a more serious problem than a slight top end oil leak, a whole head or engine swap may be more economical.

I do actually have a newly rebuilt, ported head for sale with Kent Supersport cams. It used to live in Ross's 1.8, which I bought, but now we are using a base 2.0 head, and I am having the 1.8 one rebuilt so it can be sold as perfect condition for someone else.

If you're interested I'll tell you the spec :)

Hmmmm, now that is tempting. Whats the spec? The nice thing with the car is the gearbox is sound and the engine isnt making any untoward noises. So its not all doom and gloom. What do you mean by graphite decals? (or am i being silly)

rally decals

Graphite, as in the colour

Matching dark anthracite MO alloys, unless you were thinking of keeping the whites?

I've heard the engine, and it sounded like the bottom end was fine, just some sort of top end oil leak causing the smoke. :)

My head is a 1.8 head, ported to just above std. 2.0 spec, larger valves with 3-angle valve seats, new tappets, Kent cams (Supersport R) and Kent vernier pulleys. About £1k there in parts mate. Rebuild alone is costing me around £180.

Spose I'd want IRO £500 for it, but let me talk to Giles about the price and what it'd cost new :)

I asked because there is people on here that do it and will give me a guide. And i want a guide as i will strip it very soon other wise!

JUST GIVEN THE CAR A THOROUGH GOING OVER AND IM AFRAID THE CAR MAY JUST BE TOO MUCH. The skirts are damaged, power steering pump noisy, horn broken, indicator stalk not working properly, ABS light stuck on, paintowrk has runs in it, door rubbers have overspray, scratched windscreen, and of course, the engine............. :(

Parts to follow :(

Sorry Rich. :(

2.0 ZETEC FITTED PRICE

Nah, he didn't run at pod, just gave it some beans when leaving, and it did smoke pretty bad! :O

2.0 zetec is the way forward, due to simplicity.

P/S pump - if it whines and it increases with engine speed, it's probably fucked. I'm sure I've got a spare or 2. There's 2 diff types, so post a pic of it and I'll let you know.

Indicators - common worn stalk issue, even on mk6s!

ABS light - normally due to low fluid level.

Skirts - as this is the first time you've mentionned it, I guess this is an area not really visible unless you put your head on the ground? It's quite easy to knock cyclone skirts........... when I did it I just took some 40-grit to the small area of smashed fibreglass matting to clean it up, and I've never repaired it further! :D

From memory, the bumpers hadn't been painted that well, so I'm not surprised you say they have runs. :(

Hope that helps a little Dan.

Ralph.
