dansGTI
Whats the best route to 200bhp in a mk6? Turbo the existing 1800cc? Turbo a 2000cc? Put a RST CVH in? Or go and put something like an ST170 (2000cc) straight in and mildly work it? AND THE BEST QUESTION IS: WHAT IS THE CHEAPEST? I am not good with this and need a drive in, drive out job on it. After peoples advice?!
Matthew H
i would have thought that rst would be the cheapest,
foxdie
your gonna have to do more than "mildly work" an st170 to 200p. Remember the st170 engine is just a 2.0 balck top zetec with varable valve technology. It already has an injection equivlant to throttle bodies utilising varable split intake system, 4-2-1, miltek highflow CAT, off the shelf matched and balance pistons and a higher compression ratio. So getting that already tuned unit 200hp is going to be expensive. Although, i've heard rumours that they turbo-up-well. especially the 280hp version i saw running at engine advantages - that had minimal tuning (8psi)
Ex-Finesse
It does need to be turbo to feel as quick as your 200bhp Astra turbo A rebuilt CVH could well be cheapest to get 200bhp, but the zetec would be torquier than either 1600 or 1900 CVH engines. Email Giles about a 200bhp spec zetec turbo. At that power level, some people would say you could use standard pistons, and a small turbo like a T2 (will only JUST give 200 though) or T25. Personally I'd always go for forged pistons for reliability and strength. A std. zetec bottom end with forged pistons will take 240bhp all day long, with only a check needed on the rods and crank. To save money, a FRST loom and management could be used, but for about £1k you can get new basic management and loom. Gotech management is a new cheap system that came out a few months ago, and has very positive reviews. I'll post Giles email when I get home Dan. dansGTI
Ralph, if you were female, id kiss you! I will have a RST engine with everything, also obviously the 1800 from the gti. So that would help with the ZVH wouldnt it?

So that would help with the ZVH wouldnt it? Yeah, you'd have most, if not all parts for ZVH then. ZVH utilises the top end of a CVH and all the inlet, wiring and ancillaries, with the stronger zetec bottom end. That's the reason for doing it. Trig
Although you would be going back in time, going from a modern 16v head to a mid 80's designed 8 valver, but its the cheapest way of doing it.
Ex-Finesse
Not really a bad thing re. age trig. 8v's tend to give a slightly smoother torque curve, coming in earlier, so can be slight benefit. Anything with a T25 will spool nicely though. Turbo will give 250bhp, so no need for anything bigger.
dansGTI
What else would i need to do this? The gearbox in the gti wont last 5 mins with 200bhp. I've already got my eye on the right brakes for it. What loom/management do i use? Giles is realy the best person to ask!

Ex-Finesse
Muzzathon - what? MTX box, despite being more heavy duty, will not last long at 200bhp / 200lbs or more. Best speak to CTS imo, see what most RST owners go for with those power levels. See if they'll offer the same spec in the later iB5 gearbox, as the RSTs use the older BC type, but they're both very similiar.
stuey650
There's a couple of guys on the rs2000-16v forums running around the 200bhp and as far as I know they are using the MTX box with no troubles. The popular route with the rs2k is a scorpio/galaxy 2.3 bottom end and the rs2k head. One of these 2.3's is running 212bhp and thats a N/A engine so you wouldn't have the turbo lag. Not sure what other mods he's running to get this sort of performance or what kinda money he had to spend but it might be worth checking out. Ex-Finesse
Stuey - not gonna have 200lbs torque though, which is what is needed as Dan doenst want it to be slower than his Astra turbo! You'd need a very special 2.3 to reach 200lbs torque! The 2.3 Duratec with 240bhp has 200lbs torque, for your info
Stu
MTX75 will last aaaaaages at 200 ft-lb.. Dropping an rs turbo cvh in will technically be the cheapest.. next up would be a budget zetec turbo (see http://turbo.me.uk for guide).. You don't really want to be using a T25 turbo for 200bhp.. you want something larger.. T25's crap out at about 220bhp and you're seriously compromised at this power level (I know from experience).
