MikeM
Hi all my mate has just brought an escort mk5b which is in good condition apart from a patch of rust on the wheel arch. Half has just bubbled and should hopefully clean up but the rest has a small hole in it. As he has two kids and a wife he cant afford to get it done at a body shop so we're gonna do it. Have seen some body filler (hole and rust filler) that we're gonna get to use. Now to the point - is the best way just to fill it and paint it or do we have to treat the rust before filling it?? Any help would be great Thanks
PeeWee
Problem here is that unless you remove the rust back to bare metal it will just come back, grind the rust out & treat the surrounding area to stop it coming back before you even consider filling & painting

cossie 200
clean it up with a grinder(remove all the rust) fill it with fiberglass and sand it back then skim it with fillers to smooth it over. sand , prime and paint. if you dont remove the rust it will come back very quickly
MikeM
my mates idea was just to spray over it without doing anything!!!! If it comes back he can do it again Least it ain't my car I'm getting my small patchof rust done properly at a bodyshop
Nick C
Its pointless doing it without removing the rust first mate, will look even worse than it does now - and it will come back within weeks. Probably best to leave it imo if he doesn't want to do a proper job
