10,000 Motorists Face Congestion Fines

Up to 10,000 motorists are facing fines of £80 for failing to pay to drive into central London on the first day of the congestion charges.Manual checks are expected to reduce that number but those left will receive penalty notices by the end of the week, London Mayor Ken Livingstone warned. It remains unclear how many people deliberately tried to avoid the £5 charge and how many were unable to pay because the call centre and web site were jammed.

A total of 190,000 vehicles yesterday crossed into the congestion zone which covers eight square miles of central London.

This was a 25% drop in traffic, but some of the fall was due to the school half-term holiday in London.

Over 100,000 paid the £5 for the day.

Rebecca Rees, of the AA, described the non-payment figure as "very high" and urged flexibility for those who could prove they tried to pay.

100,000 paying a fiver each, thats half a million quid in ONE DAY 8o

Thats £182,500,000 a year 8o (I think?)

8o 8o 8o 8o 8o 8o

Thats almost enough to look after 10 Asylum Seekers FFS!

I live very close to the zone, but its been really easy getting to work last couple of days - no traffic!

But i put that down to half term, so I will have to wait till next week to see if its made any difference

same..

luckily i work out of london so it not to bad for me.. but i think it is more easy money for the government from the motorist! ;( as usual

Blimey thats a lot of money in a day, didnt realise there were that many people in London.

wonder how much will get spent improving roads and public transport, not a lot i expect, makes me angry.

I live just ouside and they expect problems with people using the surrounding areas to park there cars and then getting the train the rest of the way so the propose a residents only parking scheme.

Which would mean me paying 30 quid a year to get a residents parking pass to park outside my own house, this caused uproar and has been suspended temporarily.

:vangry: ..................just typical Fcuking Britian :( .I have an idea, lets donate the revenue to bringing in more 'so called' asylum seekers and house them in luxury.

It's a shame i'm not 'in power' as you'd see some pretty drastic changes in this .........useless, wasteful, bend over backwards to every Tom,Dick & Harry who wants to settle in this Shite hole of a country :) ............Do i make myself clear? Al.
