F1ACK Posted February 21, 2003 Posted February 21, 2003 Just picked up my 2 year old nepthew, coming home, pull out and the stereo goes off, I thought it was just a scratch on the CD till I looked down to see smoke pouring out of it and out from around the dashboard Pulled over, turned it off and got my nepthew out the car, smoke filled the car pulled the pannel out and found it was the stereo with smoke pouring out. managed to get that out of the car and unplug it all, luckily nothing else seems to have been damaged, but I only brought it a few months ago and it wasn't cheap, so the playstations coming out, and no more dvds for me
John Posted February 21, 2003 Posted February 21, 2003 ouch. any warranty on the thing or is it total loss? john
F1ACK Posted February 21, 2003 Author Posted February 21, 2003 I'm heading down to halfords to shout some abuse and get them to hopefully sort it
sortedford Posted February 21, 2003 Posted February 21, 2003 as long as they cant say its down to your fitting mate, which im sure they will try and do, unless they fitted it?
F1ACK Posted February 21, 2003 Author Posted February 21, 2003 cheers all, not sure as the the cause, couldn't see any physical cause, wiring looked fine and no stray wires, the techical term used by the audio specialist at halfords was, "thats definately fried, smells like when I cook toast" They took it back and as it was an item that they will only sell with halfords fitment, they assumed it was fitted by them I'm not too annoyed, its just lucky the car wasn't damaged (although it stinks like anything now) a mates lending me an alpine stereo so will still be able to use my cd changer and subs and they said it should be fixed in 7 to 10 working days I was expecting a run of expensive luck as it is february (the month my insurance is due) and expenses always come at once, almost to the day last year I snapped my gearbox shaft clean in half
Evv Posted February 21, 2003 Posted February 21, 2003 glad to hear the cars safe m8 sorry to hear about it happening though but ur lucky u relised
Twisted Posted February 21, 2003 Posted February 21, 2003 if theres any damage to the dash etc (smoke damage) get them to pay for that too A full velet
F1ACK Posted February 23, 2003 Author Posted February 23, 2003 GOOD NEWS! replaced the stereo with this Its no where near as good as the multi-media unit, but its also an alpine so it pluged straight into all my cd changer... so it would do as a tempery unit. Borrowed it from a mate and fitted it yesterday morning. All was well, untill I heard the whinning sound again following the revs and smelt the burning smell again, quickly turned the engine off and again smoke was pouring out the dash, F**K I'm thinking, the head unit was a couple of hundred quid  thats 2 recked in 2 days!!! I took it out and contiuned home, when it happened again, a whinning noise and a smell of buring, this time with the head unit in at'll Looking at the ammeter I realised it was this that was buring hot, the needle has melted and its bent to the screen, the terminals on the back have melted and bent down it was rather screwed!!! So today I went down to halfords, didn't want to tell them too much, but asked if I could see my headunit, I got it back and put it in the car and it all worked fine, still stunk of smoke but all working as normal. So I am again happy same the ps2 has been returned to its rightful place
F1ACK Posted February 23, 2003 Author Posted February 23, 2003 Now I've given up with the gauge idea, I have ripped them out of the car and left a big hole. So competition time, what can I put in place of the gauges, it must be flat and non essential, as the screen covers it most of the time, and must fit into a normal sized stereo hole. This is what I did have and this is what I have to work with now Ideas people? The prize will be a mangled burnt out melted ammeter, if I don't have to send it back
