Fuel and Temp Gauge

Hey just bought an Escort, but the Temp gauge rarely works, and the fuel gauge is on red. I put £20 in, after 80 miles, it waz readin left than a quarter, so i put another 15 quid in. then after another 130 miles, its on the red. So ive put £35 quids worth of petrol in, 200 miles and its on the red, each time i filled up tho it waz readin half tank full.

Anyone know what could be wrong, and r both temp and fuel gauges linked ?

temp guage - check the plug is on the sender, maybe clean the sender up

fuel - fill the car to the briim, then see how many miles u get til ur deep in the red (shud be 280-320 under normal driving)

check ur spark plugs, are they sooty, does ur exhaust smell strongly of petrol???

does a 1.6 really use that much petrol, i put £35 in and done 220 miles and still going. my 1.2 bravo i could get 400+ miles out of a full tank which is about £40 quid.

Sounds about right to me. I think that's about what I get on mine. Although I don't really take much notice.

As Peewee has pointed out, a 1.2 will take less fuel than a 1.6

Yeah and it also depends on what type of driving you are doing as around the town you will get a lot less than if you are driving on the motorway and 60mph is the most efficient speed for petrol consumption vs distance.

I think I get out of my 1.6 about 300 miles of around the town driving on a full tank (approximately £50 given current petrol prices :vangry: ) which does include morning and night time rush hour traffic and works out at about 16p per mile (it makes you think). So 280 on £35 isnt that bad in my opinion as its 12.5p per mile. However if im travelling long distances and am on the motorway for long times then I can get about 140 miles out of a quater of a tank so roughly 500 miles on a full tank, but that does involve driving at 60 - 65mph which is really hard to do as you just want to speed things up and get where ever you are going quicker. But start going over 80 / 85 mph and the petrol will just disappear!

Also you could try some Redex, or equivelent as that might improve your petrol consumption.

what u get to a 1/4 means nothing,as the guage on an escort moves a lot faster the lower it goes,i used to get 200 miles from the first half and then the guage wud fall thru the floor over the next 100 miles

Yeah I totally agree about there inaccuracies as it doesnt usually move of the full mark for atleast 30 - 40 miles and usually I find that when it says its empty theres usually 10 litres of petrol left in. But I have got over 400+ on long drives with the needle been above the empty mark but obviously I dont like to run nearly on empty to see how much further I can go.
