Stu
First of all, unplug it and bridge the connector (on the wires) with a paperclip or piece of wire (with the ignition on) and see if the gauge moves.
karlpountney
I also have the exact same problem; although the temp gauge did work perfectly the other day and now it doesnt . Exactly how do you disconnet it and bridge the connecters as the Haynes manual is very brief on this and provides no pictures. Also whats the ford part number for the replacement sender? Thanks Karl
Stu
You unplug the sensor. The connector (on the loom) has two holes in it. You stick a single piece of wire in those two holes. Et voila.

karlpountney
I assume this is the connector I am meant to be removing? [see image] Also it may sound stupid but i cant pull it out - is it really stuck in or some sort of jiggle method? http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x319/ka...pg?t=1182873808 Also does anyone have the ford part number, so I can get a replacement? My car is a 1995 MK6 Escort LX Thanks Karl
Stu
Can you zoom out a bit and show a bit more, i'm not sure that's the right sensor.
ScORTED
thats the bottom sender alright... push the metal clip in towards the body of the plug then pull
karlpountney
Yeah sure, but it does appear to be on the forward facing side of the thermostat housing (I could be completely wrong though lol) although you cant see that for the big black air pipe. If I'm wrong which is very likely where the hell is it?http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x319/ka...pg?t=1182875827Thank you very much and my previous post can be ignored lol.Thank you very much and my previous post can be ignored lol. ScORTED
that is the right one... replace it
karlpountney
Yeah that worked a treat - beaten by a metal clip lol. Well I used a paperclip to connect either end together and it shot up to the red - very satisfying to see that the needle can actually move lol. So I definitely need to replace the temp sender. Can anyone tell me where I can get one from? Do I have to go to the local ford dealer? Also according to the Haynes manual I need to drain the cooling system; is this necessary? Its fine if I have to. Sorry that may seem a stupid question but in their guide to replace the indicator stalk you have to remove all sorts or bits and bobs which arent necessary. ScORTED
haynes is usually the corect way to do things... you can often take short cuts... you should drain the coolant, and unless its vbeen recetly replaced it would be wise to do so you can if you make sure the engine is cool undo the old one and replace loosing only a very small amount of coolant, you can then top this back up. i'm not sure if you can get it anywhere else but its only a few £ from ford
