London Mega Mosque

Right, unless you've been living under a rock, you have probably heard about the propsed "Mega Mosque" to be built in East London by an ultra-orthodox islamic sect, supposedly to be financed by either £100m of government funds, although early reports suggested it was to be funded by ....

Situated next to the Olympic site in Newham, it is expected to have a capacity of 12,000 worshippers.

We all know how laughable some of these online petitions can be, however, amidst a petition with already at least 48,000 signatures, the government have suggested that it could "raise tensions" in the area, and are not expecting any planning applications for it in the near future, but the group are still planning to submit proposals at some point.

The main concern from people signing the petition seems to revolve around the idea of a Mosque being the focal point and key landmark in London, with the proposed structure being bigger than St Pauls, Westminster Abbey and Wembley Stadium.

Heres the text from an email i received today that got me reading a bit more around the subject:

The mosque will be BIGGER THAN ST PAUL'S!!!

The plan is for the mosque to

be so big so that people flying in from all over the world for the 2012

Olympics will see it as the biggest landmark in London , bigger than St

Pauls, Westminster Abbey or Wembley Stadium.

The vote so far is 56 % in favour.

It looks like the Muslim community in the UK is casting its vote in droves,

and as usual the British are burying their heads in the sand...

It is an undemocratic use of British

Tax payers money, especially when our Churches that are 100's of years

old get no government funding to keep their structures standing, and we are supposedly a Christian Nation.

Taken from a Times Online article:

Tablighi Jamaat, which translates as “Proselytising Group”, claims on its website to stand for “democracy and freedom” and says it is “a role model to promote social and religious integration”.

But the site also adds that “complete success in this world and the hereafter is only achieved in following the way of life shown by Muhammad and every other way leads to failure in this world and the hereafter”. Strict followers of the sect’s doctrine sleep on the ground and brush their teeth with a twig following the practices of Muhammad.

Thought it would be interesting to have a bit of a discussion on this matter, given the opinions and social stances many of us have on this sort of thing.

what a JOKE, can't beleive they even contemplate this.

government money is much needed elsewhere, let alone building one of the largest landmarks in the capital for a faith who have caused this country grief in so many ways. (not all of them granted)

Im not a religious man and wouldnt say Britian is religious country as much as it had been in the past, but our rules/laws/society is based around the christian faith.

The comment about old churches i agree with, i do appreciate old architechture and there are many buildings belonging to the various churches that need TLC to make them great once more and last teh tide of time.

Seems very wrong in my eyes to have a islamic building bigger than our religious landmarks, i know that sounds a bit like "our landmarks bigger than yours" type of thing but we all know how much religion has featured in so many wars/disputes/conflicts.

I think it would raise tension than the community doesnt need right now.

Im not sure but i would hazzard a guess that non islamic faiths would not be allowed in there?

yes well done scott, well thought out and useful comment there..

tbh its a case of they are damned if they do and damned if they dont..... if they DO build the mosque we will all be up in arms and that will just cause more tension and if they are not allowed to build hte mosque the muslim community will say we are being racist and infringing on there rights to practice their religion..

fun fun fun

Well they know where to go then don't they? Do you see christians being allowed to be something the size of Westminster in their countries of origin?

This is a multi faith society but the religion of this country is Christianity.....to put up such a big symbol saying otherwise will end up causing major tension amongst the population...which still far outways ethnic minorities. Revolutions have been caused by less......
