nick_GTI
The heat shield what goes over the top of the cat has half come of and dragging on the floor and is now about knackered. Will take it of when the rain stops Just wanted to know do i need one on there or can i just rip it of and forget about it? If i do need one can you buy these? Cheers, Nick

Stu
Yeah, Ford don't have a clue what they're doing, hence why they put it there.
ScORTED
they don't last long... and none of my escorts have exploded or broken down after having the heat shields removed
Craig855S
the cat heatsheild is nowhere near the fuel tank, its there for a reason tho,i'd say dont remove it,renew it. Sat in traffic the other week i noticed my centre console was pretty warm, very warm actually, without heatshields maybe my carpet cudda caught fire? sidrick
lol Scoop. I haven't seen many Escort spontaniously combust due to the lack of a heatshield.
Craig855S
u never know, when i first ran my old cars 1.8 engine on 1.6 ECU it was running poorly and i looked under the car,the cat was glowing red and the water on the floor was evaporating hugely fast.i reckon under circumstances like that it may be possible, but still very unlikel;y,but hey,the heatsheild is there to protect the underside of the car from the heat. so altho my car wud not have caught fire when i was in traffic the other week had i not have had a heatshield,it wud at least have made the centre console uncomfortabley hot to touch
sidrick
That was because you were running so lean. It's hardly common practice. And the heatshield is there to do more than to protect the underside of your car.

nick_GTI
Ok then i should think about renewing it. Can you buy these then to fit certain cars
Trig
they usually tear around the area that they bolt up, find some big washers that will press the heatshield back in position. they are going to have to be around 30mm in diameter, the bolt that screws up to hold it on is about 24mm. Cheers for that Trig but i dont think the the shield will be much good because it broke of when i was doing 70mph down a bypass and had to still drive 20miles to get home with it scraping on the floor and from what i can see it has split. Have not had chance to get the car out the garage and have a proper look yet as it aint hardly stop raining since saturday
