Stu
There is only one way to get rid of rust. Cut it out and replace the panel.
white_van_man
the rust will always be there and come back, doing repairs like that will just be temporary but if the rust isnt on structural parts of the car then yeah its ok, but dont expect the rust to stay away
Joe
I know it wont stay away, Its a very temporary measure to impress the bird and her parents, then when the time comes, it will be done properly, but does the method sound ''okay''..... Escort_Kid
Itll be fine as a temporary measure untill the pieces can be properly replaced, see this thread for how i done my arch for now until i can afford to replace it: http://www.escortevolution.co.uk/forums/in...showtopic=83119
Joe
Heres how i fixed my arch until i can afford to get it all replaced with a new metal arch: Took out the rust, rust treated it, fibreglassed it, fillered it, primered it, coloured it, lacquered it Some pics of my work: Super job there kid, excellent, Took out the rust, rust treated it How did you do the above?Joe
Escort_Kid
Cheers Joe To remove as much rust as i could, first i cut the really badly rotted edge of the lip off, then this is going to sound a really crude way of doing it, but then i used a flat head screw driver and picked and poked away at my arch until no more would come off as hard as id try, because then i knew i had basically most of the bad, crumbly and rotted stuff off, so all i was left with is hard, solid metal, then i used a solution called 'Kurust' which i applied very generously to the whole area and left that to work its magic for the stated amount of time on the tub, then after i had done that, i started the rebuild and painting process of the arch
Craig855S
kid,ur work looks ace? has it resurfaced yet? The only way to get rid of rust is to cut the "infected" metal away, and put new stuff in there, rust cannot be killed,u can sand it off til u see shiny metal again, but the panel still has parts of it oxidised and it will spread again. TBH,i say do it properly, and leave it as it is until that time, dont spend 50 quid now and 100 quid next month just to impress ur bird just spend 100 quid next month and ur sorted TBH mate i think they'll be impressed enough, u have a bloody smart 5 door Gti looker, the best on the site IMO but on the same note, its an escort,so theyre not gonna be that impressed. u cud turn up in a dirty not-been-washed-since-it-left-the-showroom mk2 focus and they'd be more "impressed" but its not about the car, they shud like u for u. EDIT. i didnt mean to put a question mark where the first question is. that was sposed to be a statement. Kid,ur work looks ace!

Escort_Kid
Any experience with metal filler (metallik) kid?Which filler did you use? P35? Joe No ive never used 'metallik' before. I used P40 for the main bulk and structure of the arch: Then i used P38 for the final shaping and finish:
