Renting

What's everyones opinions on renting a council house?

Personally, I think although it's cheap, the general surrounding area usually sucks. Basically just associated with riff raff....

Our current situation is me and my partner are renting a room privately for £70 a week, with all bills included (water, gas, electricity, internet....because I supplied the router) and I get along with everyone else in the house as they're my partner's brother, work friend, and just a really friendly landlord.

Do you think we would be better off renting a council house...well, flat more than likely. My girlfriend really wants to but I'd rather settle for buying a house in an area I like...

Opinions please! :)

Council houses rent privately around here for £85 a week, 3 bedroom, 2 loo's, and a village location. The area is good with excellent schools, links with town and other surrounding areas. So it's all good here. :)

The local council have also just started rent to buy with shared ownership, usually 50% increasing when you can afford it until you own your home. It's now on brand new builds, but I the option is still there to purchase older houses so I'm told.

There's nothing wrong with renting of any kind in my opinion, whether privately with a landlord or through the local council. As long as you like the area, the house, etc its all well and good. :)

I\'m very happy renting and have no intention of buying.

If you get your name on the council waiting list be prepared for a very long wait if they are anything like my council. When I enquired about 3 years ago I was told I could be put on the list, but I wouldn\'t get one as I was renting privately, wife wasn\'t pregnant etc.

Nothing at all wrong with council houses if the areas ok. I know that the majority of them in the town I live in are fine.

Im renting at the min, sharing with my girlfriend. because of uncertantines surrounding her employment position in 14 months. its working out to be ideal because it gives ample opportunity to save for a deposit for a house when we decide to buy. I concede that in a way we are losing £600 a month as dead money, buy in the long run its cheaper than paying out to buy now and then sell up again in 14/15 months because of how much it costs just to buy a house without actually paying for it.

If you are looking at buying soon then i would take the cheapest option (remember your bills, council tax, rates, etc) and save like mad to put yourselves in the best positio to buy once you decide to take the plunge.

why not just rent a normal flat? im think u cud find a 1 bed/2 bed flat for less than 400 a month. my old one was 375,then there was council tax and bills and so forth

It's at least twice that in my area for the same thing.

A lot of people think renting is dead money, but tbh I don\'t see it this way. If I had a mortgage I woldn\'t be able to afford to live where I am, and I also wouldn\'t be able to afford to go on as many holidays that I am accustomed to.

A lot of people in england think that there is a social stigma towards renting, but if you look a a lot of european countries it is the norm to rent instead of buy.

As said, renting is dead money no matter what way you try and spin it, some people can only afford to rent though and therefore for them it's the only option. As always the best option is to buy, but there's nothing wrong with renting :) just don't try and fool yourself that renting isn't dead money because it is lol.
