GTi-Spy
Got new wheels on the way, but can I get the old ones off?? Oh no, not without the socket that I don't have. Wasn't supplied with the car. Any ideas? I made a call to Ford and they said duplicates aren't available obviously, and extraction is probably about £30 +VAT which could cause damage to the wheels. This might be the only option, but I'd rather not have the wheels damaged as my mate is having them off me. If anyone has any other suggestions, let me know. Cheers
Yeti man
I can't garentee it'll work but what you could possibly use is a thing called a Gator Grip. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Gator-Grip-Universal...1QQcmdZViewItem. I have heard of these things working to undo locking wheel nuts BUT they are bigger than a convension socket so if the nuts are recessed in their own hole it might be too big but if the wheels have a centre cap that is removable you might get away with it ? Opinions are varied as to how good/effective these sockets are but it might just work. The other alternative, which I had to do on my (ex) girlfriends car (Mk 3 Si Fiesta - which as we all know is more or less a shrunken Mk5 Escort) was take the whole wheel and hub assembly off, take it to work and using an industrial pillar drill, drill out the wheel bolt through the wheel nut, then just buy a new bolt (couple of quid) and knock (or press can't remember now) that back into the hub in place of the drilled out one. To be honest I would expect this to be the way a garage would do it, it has minimal chances of damaging the wheel (if they align the drill carefully), and if they did misalign slightly it would be a small amount off the taper where the nut goes, so once on a car it wouldn't be seen anyway. Michael PS. Any want some Koni's ?
furqall
i recently snapped the key to mine couldnt be arsed to do it my self, so took it to a local tyre place who charged £10 per wheel to remove them no damage to wheels
Yeti man
Well that even easier and cheaper than both my solutions !!! Make it so, No.
Tez162003
i dont know what standard ford locking nuts are but can you not just hammer on an old socket just a little smaller than the bolt and just smack it over the bolt and then turn it with that, thats all i ever needed to do
reid
you can buy stud/screw extractors. looks like a socket but with a reverse tooth. hammer it on and then unloosed it round like you would a wheel nut - as its a reverse thread you're locking the tool tighter onto the nut as you unloosen and eventually you'll unloosen that too. my boss has got a snap on set, cost £120. but im sure theres cheaper ones. I wasnt allways the most legally obliging person when I was a kid....but I somehow allways had nice alloys on my RS back then

shawdreamer
thats not really something you should admit mate, and that sort of behavious isnt condoned on this site admit to? I didnt admit to it.......... I got caught and leathered when I was 17 lol..... and yep served me soddin right too lol Im 30 now and Ive benefitted greatly from the experience despite it technically being wrong and regretful, I know which locking nuts a thievin plonker will struggle with, I know how best to park my car so the little fuckers wont try in the first place etc etc.....and most importantly.... I know just how hard a ford nuts bloke can bounce a persons head off a kerb repeatedly lol(its alot btw)
Yeti man
Maybe you could give us all pointers on those subjects then - how and where to park your car, best locking wheel nuts etc ????
shawdreamer
Maybe you could give us all pointers on those subjects then - how and where to park your car, best locking wheel nuts etc ???? first ones easy.... people that park their cars on the street because they live on a main road are usually the mostly likely targets, and most of the time they actually make it easier, for instance...they tend to try and park it directly under a street light in the belief that this makes it less favourable for a plonker to go near... wrong.... just makes it easier to see inside the car (eg wether its got sonics on the alarm or a half decent stereo) your average plonker(my pet name for what regretfully used to be btw, apt I think) will dive over to the car in this light and have a quick gander inside..... then scooby off and wait a bit..... nothing happens from the owners house.... runs back... house brick thru the window(lot less noisy than you might think) and he's in. Now if the same car was to be parked about 10 foot from the street light facing it... the light illuminates the cars exterior but not the interior( eg the dash and ceiling edges/pillars were most sonics are placed), even if said plonker does clock some sonics and nips under to cut the main cable in the bay... once inside he's fucked again......no interior lights to work by! thats just an example, small things work better than hidden alarms and sensors anyway.... window coding for instance, still puts off most every opertunist cock-end straight away, the led flasher on the dash(simple small bulb goin on and off on and off, doesnt even have to be actually doing anything but that infact) as for wheel locking nuts, the best and most likely to screw up any wheel thief are the ones currently produced by vauxhall, they are both effective against attack on both thethe inner and outer edge of the nut, in other words you cant knock on a socket and you cant hammer in a impact driver to twist them out, they just rip to shreds if you try either method, infact if you dont use the key socket supplied correctly that even destroys them anythin else?
