car running problem

Right had this problem today and i wondered what it is when driving if you change up a gear say from 3rd to 4th the car acts like theres no petrol and starts to die cough n splutter so you have to drop down a gear and sometimes it happens in that gear too but sometimes it runs fine

 

iv checked plugs n leads just incase and they seem fine its like one minute there fuel pressure and the next theres not a thing .

 

 

i know i have a leak on the petrol tank--would that cause the problem as more air is getting to it than suposed to??

fuel pump ?? or perhaps your fuel filters clogged ?

 

dont know how that would effect gears though ?

yeh could be your tank causing the problem it must be sucking a bit of air thats why its spluttering it needs to just be sucking fuel not air but i could be wrong thou. so see what everyone else says

how much fuel is in the tank when it does it?

well tanks mostly at 1/2 all the time unless i wana fill up and does it untill its empty ish

where is the leak on the tank reletive to the fuel level in there? Could also be a small leak in one of the vacum hoses to the inlet plenum.

i dont know where the leak is i had a quick look and noticed that the rubber connecter that holds the downpipe from the filler cap to the tank not on properly but garage is going to sort it for me as they fitted the tank last so its still on warentee
